I came across a relic from the year 2015 after cleaning out my work drawer the other day. It was an iPhone 6, complete with 16 GB of storage for the 4.7-inch model. My interest reached an all-time high, so I plugged the phone into my Mac, installed a new iOS 12.4.4 copy, tossed it into a SIM card to see how it was in 2020.

Here's a quick TL;DR: it does what an iPhone should do, but particularly in the software arena, with loads of compromises. For more details, read on.

The End of the Line for iPhone 6 is iOS 12

For the iPhone 6, iOS 12 is the end of the line. This phone didn't get the iOS 13 update and never would. This means that certain features such as the latest Reminders app, the super amazing dark mode, the great editing features directly in the Images app, Apple sign-in and many more will be left out. But, the iPhone experience that you would expect from an iPhone is what you get.This phone will do it and do it very well if you just want to make phone calls , send iMessages and keep your blue bubble status. Sure, there are stutters here and there, but everyday tasks are handled quite well by this thing. In addition, developers are kind enough to toss their apps with iOS 12 support even to this day, so your favourite apps and games such as TikTok, Facebook , Twitter , Instagram, PUBG, and more.

Would you like an Apple Arcade? Look Else Somewhere Other

Since the iPhone 6 has never received an iOS 13 update, you won't get Apple Arcade. In the App Store, though, there are still plenty of games out there that will work just fine.

For music, not a bad choice

If you intend to use your iPhone 6 mainly for music, it won't disappoint you at all. Apple Music is running just fine, and so are Spotify, Deezer, and all the rest. Heck, you also get AirPods Pro help, but it's a slightly damaged one. Using the stem of the AirPods Pro, you have to switch between noise cancellation and transparency modes. Not easy exactly, but it works.

Sucks Battery Life


The battery life on the iOS 12.4.4 update is very awful. I use an iPhone 11 Pro Max, so for me, the difference is much more pronounced. I just checked my email literally, browsed around for a couple of seconds and boom, the battery level dropped 4% as if it were magic. Basically, this is a phone that, if you are a heavy user, allows you to keep an additional portable battery in your other pocket.

You can squeeze an entire day of battery life with it if you find yourself not fiddling with your phone too much during the day. But to make that happen, you really have to make certain compromises, such as shutting off location services for some applications, ensuring that you don't send diagnostic data back to Apple, and so on.

The iPhone 6 is incredibly thin and I missed it.

Remember when they used to be super slim with iPhones? The iPhone 6 is just 6.9 mm thick, which is completely insane. Apple managed to pull this off using their usual feat of engineering. But all of this, clearly, comes at a cost. Cost of life of the battery. But, the moment you keep this stuff in your palm, it reminds you of how great technology looks and sounds when it's at its thinnest. It certainly looks fantastic, but there's a very simple downside: battery life. Will you take it?

Fine LTE Works

Crave those high speeds on the go with LTE? The iPhone 6 is going to treat 4 G LTE like a pro. Of course, it's not the same pace you 'd find on modern iPhones, but without stutters, it's good enough to stream YouTube or Netflix. But LTE support also means you're going to give the phone in the battery department a significant blow. You might want to consider switching from time to time between 3 G and LTE, or just place your phone in low-power mode.

Wrap-Up

If you are an exceptionally light user or only need a second smartphone for simple tasks, the iPhone 6 is not a bad phone in 2020. If you are having a really crazy deal on it, I would recommend picking one up. But, I would also suggest saving the extra cash and instead chasing down an iPhone 6s.It has the latest software update for iOS 13, ensuring it can do anything without losing what a modern iPhone can do. And if you're buying second hand, it's surprisingly capable too for just a small difference in money. So, what will it be? IPhone 6 or 6s for iPhone?
