iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 12 Pro Buyer's Guide

With a new squared-off industrial design, the A14 Bionic chip, OLED screens, and MagSafe in the range, Apple introduced the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro as the successors to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro this month.

The iPhone 12 starts at $799 ($829 for some carriers), while it starts at $999 for the iPhone 12 Pro. Can you consider buying the lower-cost model to save money, or go for the high-end Pro model, as Apple's new iPhones share a wide number of features? The question of how to determine which of these two iPhones is better for you can be answered by our guide.

Comparison between your iPhone 12 and your iPhone 12 Pro

Note that, beyond a much larger 6.7-inch display, the iPhone 12 Pro Max offers a few additional enhancements over the iPhone 12 Pro. A broader optical zoom range, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, a wider aperture telephoto lens, and longer battery life are also supported by the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Design and Colors

Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have a squared-off industrial design around the sides with a flat row. While the iPhone 12 is 25 grammes smaller, the measurements of both devices are similar. The use of various materials and finishes is more evident.

The iPhone 12 uses aerospace-grade aluminium on the edges and a single piece of polished glass on the rear, while the iPhone 12 Pro on the edges and a single piece of matte glass on the rear uses surgical-grade stainless steel.

There are also entirely different colour palettes used by the two cameras. The iPhone 12 is available in Blue , Green, PRODUCT(RED), White, and Black, while Pacific Blue, Gold, Graphite, and Silver are available for the iPhone 12 Pro.

A more glamorous look is sponsored by the iPhone 12 Pro, but the iPhone 12 still looks like a luxury smartphone. As the designs are so similar, and only differ in terms of colour choices and materials, personal preference would be favoured for the iPhone 12 or 12 Pro.

Cameras

The key distinction between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is the design of the rear camera. With Ultra Wide and Wide lenses, the iPhone 12 has a dual 12MP camera setup. It makes a two-fold zoom-out. The iPhone 12 Pro, on the other hand, has a 12MP camera system with Super Wide, Wide, and Telephoto lenses. This helps it to give a zoom in twice and a zoom out twice. The iPhone 12 Pro can capture HDR video with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps for video, but only iPhone 12 can do this upto 30 fps.
The iPhone 12 Pro also has a LiDAR scanner that allows portrait images and enhanced AR experiences in night mode.

The two devices deliver numerous camera software features beyond hardware. The iPhone 12 can use digital zoom to zoom up to five times, but the iPhone 12 Pro doubles this to a digital zoom ten times. The iPhone 12 Pro can also capture images using "Apple ProRAW," a new type of RAW file that takes full advantage of the rear cameras of the smartphone.

The iPhone 12 Pro obviously offers a more capable and completely featured camera experience, so consumers who prioritise the capabilities of picture and video can get the more costly smartphone and even consider the iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, many of these features, such as Apple ProRAW and LiDAR, may not be essential to the majority of users, beyond the telephoto lens. The camera setup of the iPhone 12 will be more than adequate for most individuals, and still offers a number of important advances, such as HDRR video recording with Dolby Vision, Night mode time-lapses, and front-facing Night mode and Deep Fusion.

Other iPhone Options

You may want to consider the iPhone 11 if you feel that the iPhone 12 is slightly out of your budget, and you do not need the new industrial design, 5 G networking, the latest A14 chip, or OLED Super Retina XDR monitor. The iPhone 11 uses the same components as the iPhone 12, has the same screen size of 6.1 inches, and starts at $599. The A13 chip and dual camera design of the iPhone 11 are still highly suitable for day-to-day use.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

You may want to consider the iPhone 12 Pro Max if you feel that the iPhone 12 Pro is too small or you want the absolute best possible iPhone camera. With a much larger 6.7-inch monitor, the iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a wider optical zoom range, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, a larger aperture telephoto lens, and longer battery life.

Final Thoughts

Overall, in terms of materials and the rear camera, the iPhone 12 Pro makes modest improvements over the iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 Pro is $200 cheaper than the iPhone 12, and it would be difficult for many people to justify the extra $200 only for more premium materials and a better configuration of the rear camera. The most premium iPhone will be sought by those who prefer the iPhone 12 Pro or are interested in unique features such as the LiDAR scanner or the telephoto lens.

It is difficult to actively recommend the more expensive device, because the two phones share a large majority of features, including design, an OLED Super Retina XDR display, 5 G connectivity, the A14 Bionic chip, battery life, and MagSafe. Since the changes are minimal and unique to the iPhone 12 Pro, most individuals can get the iPhone 12.

If you need more than 64 GB of storage, one caveat to this recommendation is. For the base model, the iPhone 12 starts at 64 GB, while the iPhone 12 Pro starts at 128 GB. Then the price difference closes between the models if you want or need 128 GB or more.
