Twelve iPhone 12 Details You Might Have Missed

The long-awaited iPhone 12 lineup, which includes the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, was unveiled by Apple on Tuesday. With smooth sides, edge-to - edge OLED screens, upgraded camera technology, and 5 G connectivity, the 2020 iPhones sport all-new designs.

During Tuesday's case, Apple highlighted many of the features of the latest devices, but there are some lesser-known tidbits you may have skipped. Before you make a purchase, we've rounded up some notable tidbits worth learning.

mmWave 5G Availability

If you expect your iPhone to be unboxed, set up, and get blazing fast 5 G speeds, you might be disappointed. 5 G is only in the early stages of rolling out, and there are small selected parts of major cities with the fastest mmWave 5 G, which means most people would not be able to access it.

The good news is that there are two forms of 5 G networks, and there will be more popular access to the slower yet still speedy sub-6GHz networks. There's no guarantee that you'll see changes in out of the box pace, but things will change over the next year.

5G Antenna

Speaking of mmWave 5 G, it is available only on iPhone 12 models sold in the United States, with iPhone 12 models only supporting sub-6GHz models in other countries. On the right side of the unit, iPhones that have mmWave support have a little antenna, so they look just a bit different.

1080p FaceTime Calls Over 5G

FaceTime calls are available at a higher-quality 1080p resolution when connected to a 5 G network or WiFi. WiFi FaceTime calls at 1080p require the installation of iOS 14 as an iOS 14 feature.

Smart Data Mode

Apple is adding a Smart Data Mode that can switch between 5 G and LTE networks when required to maintain battery life. 5 G connexions will consume more battery than LTE. Your iPhone can turn over to LTE if you do not need 5 G, such as when an app is modified in the background. The 5 G link triggers when you need 5 G to download a movie, make a FaceTime call or stream a video.

There is, of course, a toggle so that you can opt to use Smart Data Mode or have all the timing enabled by 5 G.

iPhone 12 and 12 Mini Pricing

On point, Apple advertised prices starting at $799 and $699, respectively, on the iPhone 12 and 12 mini, but that's not quite true. Such are the rates with a U.S. carrier discount, and only Verizon and AT&T have the new iPhones at those prices right now. On Friday, T-Mobile is reportedly launching some kind of similar deal, but the specifics have not been released.

If you want to buy a new ‌iPhone 12‌ or 12 mini SIM-free, it's actually going to cost you an additional $30, so the ‌iPhone 12‌ is really priced at $829 and the ‌iPhone 12‌ mini is priced at $729.

iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max Optical Zoom

The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have multiple telephoto lenses built into them. The iPhone 12 Pro has a 52 mm telephoto lens, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a longer 65 mm telephoto lens, impacting the two phones' portraits and other shots.

In the iPhone 12 Pro, the 52 mm telephoto lens supports 2x optical zoom and a total optical zoom range of 4x across all lenses, along with a maximum digital zoom of 10x.

In the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the 65 mm telephoto lens supports 2.5x optical zoom and a

5x total optical zoom range across all lenses, along with a maximum 12x digital zoom.

Sensor-Shift Optical Image

Stabilization

The iPhone 12 Pro Max's Large Camera adopts Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization,

which stabilises only the lens sensor, as the name suggests, enabling improved

stabilisation compared to the Optical Image Stabilization used before and with other

lenses. Users of iPhone 12 Pro Max can expect less camera shake and blur from motion.

In DSLRs, sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization is used, and this is the first time it has

been transferred to an iPhone. The functionality is exclusive to the wide-angle camera on

the Pro Max and is not available on the iPhone 12 Pro or on the other cameras.

The ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ uses standard Optical Image Stabilization.

15W MagSafe Charging

In the iPhone 12 models, Apple installed a ring of magnets and built a wireless MagSafe

Charger for those magnets to work with. In style, the charger is comparable to the Apple

Watch Puck, and the new iPhones clip on onto it.

With the ‌MagSafe‌ charger, the ‌iPhone 12‌ models can charge at up to 15W, which is twice

as fast as the 7.5W Qi-based charging limit.

Night Mode Portraits

With the latest LiDAR Scanner in the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, the Big Camera can

now take portrait shots in night mode. For any lighting in the shot, the LiDAR Scanner

will map out the scene to distinguish the subject from the background, while the camera

captures bright colours and artful bokeh.

Speaking of Night mode, it's also available for the Ultra Wide camera for the first time so

you can get some great nighttime wide-angle shots.

Night Mode for the Front-Facing

Camera

The new A14 chip from Apple features a new Image Signal Processor that provides the

rear cameras and the front-facing TrueDepth camera with new photographic capabilities.

For the first time, night mode operates with the front-facing camera so that you can take

neat selfies at night.

Deep Fusion and HDR 3 for Front-

Facing Camera

Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 3, and Dolby Vision HDRR also support the front-facing camera.

Recording images. Deep Fusion introduces mid-to-low colour and texture enhancements—

By taking out the best pixels from multiple exposures to create one great aggregate

image, light scenes.

For more natural lighting, Smart HDR 3 enhances highlights, shadows, white balance,

and contouring in any image, and Dolby Vision HDR support enables Dolby Vision video

to be captured and edited.

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Form Factor

In terms of specific dimensions, the ‌iPhone 12‌ and 12 Pro measure in at 5.78 inches tall, 2.82 inches wide, and 0.29 inches thick (7.4mm). The ‌iPhone 11‌ is 5.94 inches tall, 2.98 inches wide, and 0.33 inches thick (8.3mm).

If you were hoping that ‌iPhone 11‌ cases would fit the new ‌iPhone 12‌ models, then you're out of luck. The fit won't be quite right.

As for the ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ Max and ‌iPhone 12‌ mini, those are all new sizes that have no equivalent. The ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ Max is the largest ‌iPhone‌ to date with its 6.7-inch display size, while the 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌ mini is the smallest ‌iPhone‌ Apple has released since the 2016 iPhone SE.
