Widgetsmith Guide: How To, Tutorial, and Ideas

While other techniques are available to make the most of the widget feature of iOS 14, Widgetsmith is one of the most common apps for creating custom widgets.

The app provides a wide range of different widgets with various customization options,

helping you fine-tune your home screen 's appearance. These customizable widgets

are currently provided by the app for
  • * Time

  • * Date

  • * Photos

  • * Photos in Album

  • * Custom Text

  • * Blank Space

  • * Calendar

  • * Reminders

  • * Weather ($)

  • * Health & Activity

  • * Tides ($)

  • * Astronomy

Is it Free?

The software is free (get it now) to download. It does provide an optional premium

subscription that opens up access to the weather widget, tides, and unique types of

widgets, but without investing any money, it is still very available.

Popularity

Its versatility is the reason Widgetsmith has become such a common tool for iOS 14

home screens. The exact look you want can be curated with precise images and colour

schemes. The user went all in with various colour schemes in this example and sorted

their icons on different colour pages. Then, she was able to add decorative elements

with Widgetsmith.

Timed Widgets

To ensure that there is a widget to suit your needs, there are a multitude of additional
choices. Widgetsmith also allows you to schedule widgets to appear following specified
guidelines, and you can trigger widgets just like any other app by tapping on them. To
offer data at a glance, it integrates with existing stock apps such as Images, Calendar,
Reminders, Health, and Fitness.

Color Theming

This is the most versatile aspect of Widgetsmith, maybe. Although its widgets are

easy to see at first glance, the ability to select your own personal background

and border colours ensures that you can organise the perfect look for your home

screen.

Photo Widget

The odd decision was taken by Apple not to let users customise the standard \
Photo Widget. With Apple 's picture widget, you can't choose your own picture!

Fortunately, by both allowing you to set a particular picture or to rotate through
an album, Widgetsmith enables you to perform this very simple task. You can
also set timed widgets so that at various times of the day a various photo
appears. While your first instinct might be to include a picture of your dog or cat,
the more innovative uses we have seen involve more decorative and artistic
elements to spruce up your home screen.

More Ideas

In Widgetsmith, the large range of options gives you the freedom to make home

screens as you see fit. Some ideas for widget combinations for various themes in

Widgetsmith are below, but the choice is yours.

  • Sports: Activity Bar, Step Count, and Precipitation %.

  • Productivity: Upcoming Calendar Events, Calendar Month, Outlook, and
  • Reminders.

  • Photography: Weather Conditions, Sunrise and Sunset, and Photos in Album.

  • Sailing: Tide Graph, Tide Clock, and Sunrise and Sunset.

  • Astronomy: Moon Phase, Starfield, Sunrise and Sunset, and Wealther

  • Conditions.

The app comes with three calendar widgets pre-set, and you should add one of

the three sizes to your home screen. It does not matter whether you do this

before or after customizing your widgets in the app. To learn how you can add a

widget to your home screen, see our in depth guide.
