10 Long Press Tips to Reveal Hidden Functions in Safari on iPhone and iPad

A long click gesture (also known as a press-and-hold) on the iPhone and iPad will also trigger a different behavior in an app that is not instantly evident, such as displaying the contextual menu of an icon. On recent iPhones, in the form of a sensation that Apple calls Haptic Touch, a long press will often also give haptic feedback.

In its applications, Apple has made extensive use of the long press gesture and Haptic Touch, which means that if you do not tend to long press screen elements, you may be unaware of some easy shortcuts to daily actions, or you may even be totally missing out on app features.

This is especially true for the native mobile browser of Apple, Safari, which has many handy features that can be accessed with a long click. We put together 10 of our favourite long press tips for Safari on iPhones and iPads running iOS 13 in this post.

Notice that for a long gesture to be remembered, the default minimum time that a finger must press on the screen is half a second. Open the Settings app, go to Usability-> Haptic Contact, and try choosing the Quick or Slow Touch length if you are having difficulty performing a long click. To test each environment, there is also a handy interactive demo area for you.

1. Bookmark Multiple Tabs in One Go

In Safari, make sure you have a couple of tabs open that you want to reference later. Now, pick one of those tabs, and in the main browser window, click the Listmark icon for a long time (it looks like an open book).
safari tabsA pop-up menu with Add to Reading List and Add Bookmarks for X Tabs options will appear on the screen, with X being the number of tabs open. You will be prompted to save the tabs in the new bookmarks folder once you have tapped the above option. Alternatively, you can pick an existing folder where the tabs can be saved.

2. Bulk Copy Links in a Bookmarks Folder

After the last tip, if you press the bookmark folder in Safari for a long time, you will see the Copy Contents option popping up in the context menu.

safari
Selecting this will copy a list of every website URL in that folder to your clipboard, allowing you to paste it elsewhere for easy sharing.

3. Fast Scroll Web Pages

A scroll bar appears on the right-hand side of the Safari window whenever you swipe to navigate a web page.

safari
If the content you're viewing is long, perform a long press on the scroll bar. The bar will swell slightly and you'll be able to drag it up and down and scroll at a much faster rate.

4. Close All Open Tabs

Long press the Tabs icon in the bottom-right corner (top-right on iPad) of the web page view to show the Close All Tabs option if the number of active tabs has been out of hand in your browser session.

If you're in the vertical tabs view, you can reveal the same option by long pressing the Done button, which appears in the same location.

In iOS 13, depending on when you last viewed them, you can actually get Safari to close tabs on your behalf. Open the Settings app, select Safari-> Close Tabs, and you'll find options to automatically close browser tabs that were not viewed after a day, a week, or a month.

5. Re-open Recently Closed Tabs

If you have inadvertently closed a window tab in Safari and want to open it back up, open the Tabs display and click the '+' button for a long time to see all the tabs you have recently closed.

This long press option is worth remembering, because if someone picks up your phone and checks your browser, even if you've closed a page, it's always going to be open in Safari, unless you've been using a private browser window or cleared your browsing history.

6. Open All Bookmarks in a Folder in New Tabs

This option appears in the same contextual menu described in tip 2. Long press a bookmarks folder and you'll see an option to Open in New Tabs.

Select the option, and Safari will open everything in that folder in separate tabs, ready for perusal.

7. Preview a Favorite Site or Hyperlink

Long click the icon to get a glimpse of it if you want to take a look at what a particular web page hyperlink has to deliver before actually visiting the website. Notice that this action can also be performed on the Favourites or Regularly Visited Sites that appear on the new tab 's start list.

If, say, you just want to copy a URL and you don't have to wait to load the preview every time you press one for a long time, just tap Hide preview at the top-right corner of a connection preview, and you're not going to get one again.
You can revert this functionality on the same long press screen at any time by selecting Tap to show preview.

8. Merge All Safari Windows

This one is for iPad-users running iPadOS only. You can clean things up by combining all of them, including their tabs, into the active browser window if you have several browser windows open in the background.
safari
Simply tap and hold the Tabs icon in the top-right corner of the screen and select Merge All Windows.

9. Download a Linked File

You can download files directly from hyperlinks now that Safari has a Download Manager. Simply tap and hold a linked file, then from the context menu pick Download Linked File. To monitor its progress, you can tap the Downloads Manager icon in the upper-right corner of the address bar.

This option works for web pages, too. If you long press the headline of this article, for example, you can download an HTML version of it.

10. Access the Tab Control Panel

Another one that's only for iPad safari. The next time you open several tabs, to enter the new tab control panel, tap and hold one of those tabs.
safari
From this panel, you'll see options for copying the tab 's URL to the clipboard, closing all other tabs, and two completely new options for Arranging Tabs By Title or Arranging Tabs By Location. Select one of the above two choices, and alphabetically your open tabs will be organised.
