Features of iPadOS 14 You Must Know

The iPadOS 14 update from Apple contains much of the same features present in iOS 14 (minus certain improvements to the Home Screen), but there are also quite a few impressive iPad-only features.

In our most recent video, we highlight some of the best new iPadOS 14 features, some of which are also available on the iPhone and some of which are exclusive to the larger form factor of the tablet.

  • App Sidebars and Toolbars-iPadOS did not get the same interface revision as iOS, but some tweaks are worth noting. With sidebars that provide a more consistent and seamless navigation experience , providing direct access to more information and resources, applications such as Music, Images, Calendar, Notes, Data, and more have been revamped. New toolbars that merge buttons into a single bar at the top of the app have also been introduced by Apple.
  • Updated Pull-down Menus-Pull-down menus in built-in apps have been simplified along with redesigned app sidebars and toolbars, offering access from a single button to app resources.
  • Search-The search interface is more portable and takes up less room on the iPad, plus some refinements have been made that allow users to see recommendations for instant search, launch applications and websites, start in-app searches, and more. In iOS 13, it's similar to quest, but more efficient and better organised.
  • Scribble-Perhaps the best new iPadOS feature, Scribble allows Apple Pencil users to handwrite text in any text area, converting handwritten text to typed text. All sorts of useful tools are included, such as scratching to erase a word and circling to pick it.
  • Notes-Scribble brings the Notes app with new functionality. You can pick and copy handwritten notes using Smart Selection, plus you can copy handwritten notes and paste them as regular typed text. Form recognition helps you to draw and transform an imperfect shape to a perfect one, and data detectors operate with handwritten text, such as those that make an address tapable.
  • Compact FaceTime / Phone UI-Much as on the iPhone, a tiny banner that is quickly rejected displays incoming FaceTime and phone calls (from the iPhone) on the iPad, so having a FaceTime call no longer interrupts what you're doing on your mobile.
  • Compact Siri-The Siri interface is smaller too, like FaceTime calls. When you use it, Siri does not take over the entire iPad display and instead appears at the bottom of the screen as a tiny animated icon with results presented in a banner format. Siri can be swiped backward, but you can't use the monitor behind it while the Siri interface is up.
  • Safari-In iOS and iPadOS 14, there are significant changes to Safari. Privacy monitoring helps you to know the websites are running cross-site trackers, there is a built-in translator so you don't have to use an extension, you can see tab previews, and by default Favicons are displayed in tabs so you can see at a glance what's what.
  • Emoji Popover Menu-On iPadOS 14, you can enter an emoji easily with the latest emoji popover feature while using your iPad's hardware keyboard. Unfortunately, the nifty iOS 14 feature that lets you search for an emoji is not available on the iPad.
  • Emoji Popover Menu-With the new iPadOS 14 emoji popover option, you can enter an emoji easily while using your iPad's hardware keyboard. Unfortunately, the nifty iOS 14 feature that lets you search for an emoji is not accessible on the iPad.
Be sure to watch our video above to see all these features in motion, and review our iPadOS 14 and iOS 14 roundups, along with our Guides and How Tos for more on what's new in iPadOS 14.

Like iOS 14, iPadOS 14 is currently available to developers and public beta testers, so it can be downloaded and checked out by anyone. This fall, the update will see an official release to the public.
