Apple has finally released the 2020 version of the iPhone SE after nearly a year of speculation. The smartphone, including a 4.7-inch display and a Touch ID home button, shares the same design as the iPhone 8, but it has a faster A13 Bionic chip and an extra GB of RAM. Most notably, in the United States, the new iPhone SE begins at just $399.

The lower end of Apple's smartphone range currently includes the updated iPhone SE and the iPhone XR, launched in October 2018, with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus now discontinued. What about doing an upgrade? Read our comparison of the below units.
Differences
Smaller vs. Larger Display
The new iPhone SE has a 4.7-inch display, while the iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch display.
Both displays are 326 pixels per inch LCDs, True Tone, max brightness of 625 nits, a contrast ratio of 1400:1, and support for the large colour gamut of P3.
A13 Bionic vs. A12 Bionic
The latest iPhone SE is powered by the A13 Bionic, which is the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro's newest and largest chip. The iPhone XR, by contrast, is fitted with the A12 Bionic chip of the previous generation.
The A13 chip is marketed by Apple as up to 20% faster and up to 30 percent more energy efficient than the A12 chip.
Bezels vs. Notch
The new iPhone SE has the same design as the iPhone 8, with the front camera and Touch ID home button having thicker bezels above and below the monitor. The iPhone XR removes the home button by contrast, and instead has a nearly edge-to - edge display for the front camera and Face ID sensors with a notch at the top.
Touch ID vs. Face ID
For fingerprint authentication, the iPhone SE has a Touch ID home button, while the iPhone XR uses Apple's more sophisticated Face ID facial authentication method.
Face ID made its debut on the iPhone X in 2017. At the time , Apple said the possibility that someone else's iPhone X could be opened by a random person was around one in 1,000,000 versus one in 50,000 for Touch ID. Both forms of authentication, however, are very secure, so personal preference really comes down to it.
Face ID does not work well with masks, while wet or dirty fingers don't work well with Touch ID, so neither device is flawless.Since the new iPhone SE lacks Face ID, it does not support Animoji or Memoji.
Rear Camera
While both the latest iPhone SE and iPhone XR are equipped with a single f/1.8 aperture 12-megapixel wide-angle rear camera, the iPhone XR has a newer 1.4μm pixel sensor and larger Focus Pixels, while the iPhone SE is equipped with the same sensor as the iPhone 8. The new iPhone SE, however, benefits from the enhanced image signal processor of the A13 chip, so the distance between the cameras is possibly small.
Battery Life
As a physically larger device, the iPhone XR has longer battery life than the new iPhone SE.
For non-streaming video playback, Apple claims the new iPhone SE will last up to 13 hours and up to 40 hours for audio playback, which is about the same as the iPhone 8. By contrast, Apple claims the iPhone XR lasts for non-streamed video playback for up to 16 hours and for audio playback for up to 65 hours.
Wi-Fi
The new iPhone SE supports Wi-Fi 6, aka 802.11ax, while the iPhone XR supports Wi-Fi 5 or 802.11ac.
In areas with multiple Wi-Fi devices, Wi-Fi 6 offers faster speeds, greater network capacity, increased power quality, reduced latency, and improvements in connectivity. To support WPA3, the new Wi-Fi security protocol with enhanced cryptographic power, Wi-Fi 6 devices are also needed.
LTE
Compared to the iPhone XR, the latest iPhone SE supports Gigabit-class LTE, potentially allowing slightly faster LTE speeds.
Thickness and Weight
The new iPhone SE is 7.3mm thick and weighs 0.3 pounds, while the iPhone XR is slightly thicker and heavier at 8.3mm and 0.4 pounds.
Pricing
The new iPhone SE starts at $399, while the iPhone XR, both with 64 GB of storage, starts at $599. With 128 GB of storage, both devices are also available, but as of now, only the iPhone SE has a 256 GB option.
For perspective, the iPhone SE with 256GB of storage for $549 is still cheaper than the iPhone XR with 64GB of storage for $599.
Colors
Black, White, and (RED) are both the current iPhone SE and iPhone XR, and the iPhone XR is now available in Blue, Coral, and Yellow.

Bottom Line
If price is the key factor in your upgrade decision, then the new iPhone SE is a very compelling device, considering that, despite starting at just $399, it has the same A13 Bionic chip as the iPhone 11 Pro.
If price is the key factor in your upgrade decision, then the new iPhone SE is a very persuasive device because, while starting at only $399, it has the same A13 Bionic chip as the iPhone 11 Pro. If you upgrade from an older device such as an iPhone 6 or iPhone 7, you will already be familiar with the feel of the home button on the new iPhone SE, while Face ID and gestures on the iPhone And the latest iPhone SE is also available with a 4.7-inch display is also the same size as the iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8.
The new iPhone SE might also receive at least one additional year of iOS updates compared to the iPhone XR given its newer A13 Bionic chip.
Its larger 6.1-inch display and its sleek design with thin bezels, a notch, and Face ID will be two reasons to prefer the iPhone XR over the new iPhone SE. The new iPhone SE might very probably end up being the last iPhone Apple sells with a home button, but those who choose the new iPhone SE would settle for an older design.
