Safari: Complete Guide to iOS 13

On the 'App Store' there are thousands if not hundreds of to-do applications, and it is difficult to try them all out. It's worth checking out the choices on our page if you're searching for a new to-do app, as these are applications that we've tested and found useful.

From an improved start page to a new download manager, Safari in iOS 13 provides a whole range of useful changes. Below in iOS 13, we walk through all of the fresh and significant features in Safari.

Revamped Start Page

In iOS 13, Safari has a redesigned start page that now includes Siri Tips and other features (the page that is accessible when you open a new Safari window or tab).

The new start page is designed to let you get to what most interests you quickly, and it makes sure you don't forget to check out websites recommended to you by friends and family.

Website View Menu

In the Smart Search field where you can search or type in URLs, there's a new icon on the left denoted by two As.

Tapping on this icon opens up the new Website View menu, where you can access the following controls:

  • Text Size Options - Adjust the size of the text on the website you're on.
  • Enable Reader View - Enable Reader View on the website you're on, which gets rid of ads and formatting for a clean book-style reading interface.
  • Hide Toolbar - Eliminates the Toolbar so you can see the webpage you're on full screen.
  • Request Desktop Website - Instead of a smartphone edition, load the desktop version of a website. This functionality is for the iPhone, as the iPad now loads desktop versions of websites rather than mobile versions automatically. If the desktop site is already loaded, it becomes a 'Request Mobile Website'.
  • Website Settings - Provides each website with access to individual settings. You can configure the site you're on to load automatically or always load as a desktop website in the Reader view. On a per-site basis, you can also allow or disable content blockers and toggle access to your camera, microphone and venue. In the Safari section of the Settings app, under "Website Settings," you can view sites where you have personalised settings.

Website Settings

There are new per-site controls in the Safari section of the Settings app that allow you to change everything from page zoom to privacy settings for all the websites you visit (with individual site settings adjustable using the above-mentioned View Menu).

Custom settings you've set will also be listed here along with the toggles to control all websites by default. Available settings:
  • Page Zoom - Sets the page zoom level for all websites from 50 percent to 300 percent. The default is 100 percent.
  • Request Desktop Website - Lets you enable Request Desktop Site for all websites by default.
  • Enable Reader View - Lets you enable Reader View for all websites by default. Sites with a Reader mode will always load in that view.
  • Enable/Disable Content Blockers - Lets you toggle on or toggle off content blockers for all websites.
  • Camera Access - Controls camera access. Available settings are Ask, Deny, and Allow.
  • Location Access - Controls location access. Available settings are Ask, Deny, and Allow.
  • Microphone Access - Controls microphone access. Available settings are Ask, Deny, and Allow.
If you have activated any of these settings on a per-domain basis using the View menu, such as MacRumors.com Request Desktop Site, you can disable or uninstall the presets using the Edit menu for each category in the Site Settings section.

There's also an option to clear all settings when using this view.

Saving Open Tabs as Bookmarks

Safari in iOS 13 contains a new feature that allows all of your open tabs to be bookmarked. "Long press the bookmark icon at the bottom of the Safari window to get there and then pick "Add Bookmarks for [x] Tabs.

Selecting this will provide you with an interface where you can choose a new folder name and location for the bookmarks to be saved.

You can open all the bookmarks you saved in new tabs (or any other folder's bookmarks) by opening the Bookmarks interface, pressing the folder for a long time, and selecting the new option Open in New Tabs. An option to copy the content is also open, which has also been added to iOS 13.

Accessing Open Tabs From Search

Instead of opening a new tab, Safari will guide you to the open tab on iOS 13 when you start typing the address of a website that is already open on another tab. This means that you're not opening unnecessary tabs.

Automatically Close Safari Tabs

If you want to set your Safari tabs to automatically close after a set period of time, there's a new option to do so in the Safari section of the Settings app.

Open Settings, pick Safari, scroll down to where 'Close Tabs' appears, and choose the option you want. The default setting is manual, which means that tabs will not close unless you close them yourself, but after one day one week, and one month, you can also set tabs to clear automatically.

Redesigned Share Sheet

The Sharing Sheet in iOS 13 has been revamped, making a new list-style view easier to navigate with options such as Copy, Add to Reading List, Add Bookmark, and more.

Several communication suggestions are now now included in the Sharing Sheet, including individuals you've recently talked to in nearby messages and AirDrop devices.

There is a new feature to share an entire web page as a link, a PDF, or in the Share Sheet Reader view, and you can choose whether to submit content as a PDF or a Web Archive via the "Options" interface. By default, though, for each app or action, iOS 13 will choose the most appropriate format."

Sign In With Apple

Apple launched a new Apple Sign In feature in iOS 13, which is a privacy-focused alternative to current sign-in options from companies such as Twitter, Google and Facebook.

Apple Sign In is designed to allow you to sign in using your current Apple ID as an authentication method for different apps and websites. Unlike Google, Twitter, and Facebook sign-in options, when using Sign In with Apple, Apple's latest option does not track or profile you.

With Apple Sign In when signing up for a new website account, there is no need to create a login name or email address. Apple Sign In is authenticated via Face ID or Touch ID, and with two-factor authentication, your data is further protected.

Apple has developed a "Hide My Email" function to help you create unique single-use email addresses that forward to your real email address while keeping it unavailable to third-party apps and services if you don't want to share your email address with an app or service that uses Sign In with Apple.

Sign In with Apple is designed to work in Safari on iOS, Safari on Mac, in apps, and on other platforms.

Weak Password Warnings

Safari sends you an alert and recommends a stronger password when signing up for a new website account if you try to use a weak password.

Stronger Encryption

Safari history and open tabs that have been synced to iCloud are secured with end-to-end encryption in iOS 13, ensuring that your browsing history is not usable by anyone but you.

Enhanced Anti-Fingerprinting Protections

In iOS 13, Apple improved the anti-fingerprint safeguards in Safari, introducing additional protections for browser fonts. Anti-fingerprinting strategies prohibit businesses from controlling the web surfing operations from website to website.

Download Manager

Safari includes a new Update Manager that suits the Safari Desktop Download Manager. A little download icon is displayed in the upper right corner of the display when you want to download a file, such as an image.

Tapping on the icon will let you see a list of files that you've downloaded, and tapping on the magnifying glass next to any file opens its enclosing folder.

By default, your downloaded Safari files are saved in the Downloads section of the Files app, but by opening the Settings app, selecting the Safari section, and pressing the Downloads section, you can configure the location of the file storage.

You may opt to save files on your iPhone, iCloud Drive, or elsewhere, such as a separate iCloud folder, Dropbox, or another cloud service.

Items in your Safari Download Manager can be set to be deleted after one day, upon successful download, or manually. One day is the default.

Safari on iPadOS

Although both the iPhone and the iPad are available with all of the above features, there are several new improvements and enhancements that have been made to iPadOS, the iOS 13 edition that is built to run on the iPad.

Desktop Websites

All websites on the ‌iPad‌ now display in desktop mode rather than mobile view, better mimicking the viewing experience that you get on a Mac.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Similar to the shortcuts that can be used for Safari on a Mac, Safari for iPadOS adds 30 additional shortcuts that can be used while browsing.

The new keyboard shortcuts work with the Smart Keyboard from Apple or any third-party Bluetooth keyboard.

  • Use default font size in Reader (Command + 0)
  • Open link in background (Command + tap)
  • Toggle downloads (Command + Alt/Option)
  • Open link in new window (Command + Alt + tap)

  • Email this page (Command + I)
  • Open link in new tab (Command + Shift + tap)
  • Decrease Reader text size (Command + -)

  • New Private tab (Command + Shift + N)
  • Actual size (Command + 0)
  • Open search result (Command + Return)
  • Toggle bookmarks (Command + Alt/Option + 1)

Full Toolbar in Split View

The full toolbar is now seen while using Safari in Split View. The search bar was clear in iOS 12, but none of the extra resources were accessible for doing items such as accessing bookmarks, getting to the sharing list, and more.

Creating New Windows

iOS 13 supports multiple windows from the same app in Split View, and to create two Safari windows, you can drag a link from one Safari window into to another to open Split View or Slide Over.

You can open Safari as a secondary window by dragging a connection into a multitasking window with another app already opened. For example, you can open Messages, receive a link, and drag it to create a Split View interface that has opened Safari and Messages (with the web page in the link).
