Safari iOS 14 Guide: Privacy Report, Built-In Translation, Password Warnings Compromised, and More

Apple introduces improvements for almost all of the built-in apps with each new iteration of iOS, and iOS 14 is no exception. For Safari, Apple has added some useful new features like built-in translation and a Privacy Report that provides a rundown on all of the trackers that Safari is blocking.

This guide includes all of the new features and tweaks you'll find in Safari 14 for iPhone and iPad.

Speed and Performance Improvements

According to Apple, Safari features a "blazing-fast JavaScript engine" in iOS 14 that makes Safari on Android up to 2x faster than Chrome.

Built-In Translation

In iOS 14, Safari has a built-in translation feature that can be used to translate websites into English , Spanish, Chinese, French , German, Russian, or Brazilian Portuguese, accompanied by the latest Translate app added by Apple in the update.

It is as easy to translate a webpage as to visit a webpage in a supported language and then tap on the 'aA' icon in the menu bar to open the translate option. Tap Translate, and the web page will be converted automatically to the language you want your phone to use.

Additional languages to translate to can be added in the Settings app of the ‌iPhone‌, as outlined in the how to below.

Login and Compromised Password Warnings Tracking

Safari in ‌iOS 14‌ is able to monitor saved passwords, watching for passwords that have been involved in a data breach.

To allow this feature, in what Apple promises is a safe and private way, Safari uses cryptographic techniques to periodically check derivations of your passwords against a list of breached passwords. Safari will let you know if a breach is detected, and will include prompts to update to Sign in with Apple if necessary or create a new safe password automatically.

you can see potential problems under the "Security Recommendations" heading in the Passwords section of the Settings app.

Privacy Report

Safari introduces a Privacy Report feature to iOS 14 (and macOS Big Sur) that extends the Intelligent Monitoring Prevention feature of Apple. Apple has been working to avoid cross-site monitoring for the last few years, a tool that websites use to monitor the internet use as you visit various ad targeting, analytics, and more pages.

For its collection of tools that block cross-site trackers in Safari, Intelligent Tracking Prevention is Apple 's definition, and in iOS 14, Apple lists the sites use trackers, how many trackers those sites have mounted, and the most popular trackers you encounter when browsing the web.

Any website that uses monetization ads or an ad network for the same reason will have these trackers on it, as will any website that uses analytics services such as Google Analytics to gather user experience information for changes to the website and content.

Safari lists the number of trackers on each website you visit, the number of trackers stopped by Safari, the number of websites you have visited that have trackers, and a list of the most commonly seen trackers such as DoubleClick.net from Google.

You can get to the Privacy Report section in Safari by tapping on the icon that's two As next to each other and choosing the "Privacy Report" option. Note that you must have cross-site tracking prevention enabled for Privacy Report to work, and Privacy Report will prompt you to enable the feature if it's not turned on already.

Picture in Picture

If you are watching a video in Safari on iPhone, you can now tap the Picture in Picture button to view it in windowed mode, so that while the video is playing, you can continue searching another website or doing something else on your iPhone. In our Picture in Picture guide, we have more knowledge on Picture in Picture.

Simpler Sign in with Apple

Apple has created new tools to allow developers to translate existing web accounts to Apple, which will potentially make new choices accessible to iPhone , iPad and Mac users who want to convert existing logins to Apple, which is safer.

Tracking Permission

Apps that wish to monitor you in order to deliver targeted ads through apps and websites will now need to obtain user consent to do so. Two settings built for apps are Allow Tracking or Ask App Not to Track, but the function goes hand in hand with Privacy Report to prevent apps from tracking the use of your app and browsing habits on the website.

iPadOS 14 - Scribble Support

You can use the new Scribble feature with Safari to handwrite URLs, Google searches, and more with an iPad running iPadOS 14, with the handwritten text then being translated into typed text. Make certain to check out our guide for more on Scribble.

Use Another Browser

Not a fan of Safari? In ‌iOS 14‌ you can set a different browser like Google's Chrome as the default browser that will activate when you tap links.
