There are a surprising number of secret tricks on Safari on iOS, allowing you to manipulate tabs, perform page-specific searches, and more, and not all of these features are instantly evident because of the movements involved.

Safari Tips and Tricks

  • Close All Tabs -Does your iPhone have hundreds of tabs open in Safari? At once, you can close them all. Just click the "Done" button in the tab view for a long time (you can get to it by pressing the little icon that looks like two squares) and you will see an option to close all tabs.
  • Open Recently Closed Tabs -Did you inadvertently close a tab that you did not want to close? Long click the "+" button in the tab view and a list of tabs you've recently closed will be shown so you can open it right back up.
  • Search Your Open Tabs - You may need to do some digging around with lots of tabs to locate the particular tab you're searching for but fortunately, a built-in tab search feature makes this simpler. Simply scroll to the end of your tab view (or press the top of the screen to leap to the top) and you'll see a tab search bar.
  • Close Filtered Tabs - The search function doubles as a philtre if you want to close any of your tabs while keeping the others open. Long press the "Cancel" button next to the search interface after doing a search in your tabs, and you will see an option to close only the tabs that fit your search.
  • Find Text on Page - You know how you can find something unique on a website using the Command + F function on a Mac? In iOS, too, there's a find feature. When you open a website, type in a search phrase at the top of the search bar and then scroll down to "On This Page" to search the website for that keyword. Alternatively, the Sharing Sheet can be opened and the 'Find on List' button found.
  • Close Tabs on Other Devices - You can close tabs on your Mac or your iPad right from your iPhone if you have multiple devices and use iCloud along with the function that syncs Safari information. To do this, open the tab view (again the two-square little icon), scroll all the way to the bottom of your open tabs, and then you'll see an app that lists other devices' open tabs.
  • Handoff Websites - You can use Handoff, which is available on most current Mac machines and iPhones, if you are looking at a website on your iPhone and then want to open it up on your Mac. On the Mac, with a small iPhone icon, you can see a small Safari icon on your dock, just click on it and whatever you're looking at on your iPhone can be opened right on your Mac. Using the same cloud tab interface used to close tabs on other computers, you can also open websites from device to device.
