Top iOS 14 Features: Compact Phone Calls, Back Tap, Widgets, App Library and More
The iOS 14 update from Apple, arriving this fall, is filled with loads of new features , functions, and design updates, many of which have been requested by iOS users for years now. We have highlighted some of the best features included in iOS 14 in our latest YouTube video that will make you want to update to the new app.
- Image in Picture FaceTime-Do you know how when you exit the app when you are on a FaceTime call, FaceTime pauses your video? Thanks to the Picture in Picture FaceTime feature, where you can use your phone as usual while talking, that's no longer the case in iOS 14.
- Compact Phone Calls - Fed up with phone calls taking over the entire iPhone display and interrupting what you're doing? If your iPhone is unlocked and in use, incoming phone calls now show up as a small banner that can be tapped to expand it or swiped away so it's little more than a passing nuisance.
- App Library-For all your games, the App Library is a one stop shop, and it's one of those features that makes you wonder why it wasn't always available on the iPhone. In the App Library, you can find all of your installed apps, and it lets you get rid of Home Screen pages and hide apps for a much more organized iPhone gui if you like.
- Third-Party Default Applications-Tired of clicking links instead of Chrome and making them open in Safari? You can customise default mail and web apps in iOS 14 to prevent you from being forced to open links and write messages in Apple's Safari and Mail apps.
- Search in Apps - In iOS 14, Apple made search easier, and now you can scroll down to the 'Search in Apps' section when you type in a search term and select an app to immediately initiate a search in that app. Notes, reminders, mail, files, texts, the app store, and more can be searched for. The quest for apps was in iOS 13, but the functionality is extended and more structured in iOS 14.
- Approximate location sharing-Many apps are hungry for your location information, and Apple has a new option for privacy in iOS 14 that allows you to use location-based features while obscuring your exact location. Apps like those that serve weather information don't need to know precisely where you are, so instead of an exact spot, you can now opt to share an approximate position.
- Emoji Search-For a long time, the Mac had a tiny search interface to locate emoji, and Apple finally brought this same emoji search feature to the iPhone in iOS 14. To locate the exact character you're searching for, just tap the emoji (or globe) icon and then tap the emoji search bar.
- On-Device Dictation - In iOS 14, dictation now gets better over time as you use your device with all of that learning done directly on the iPhone rather than through Apple's servers. All processing is now done offline, so when you dictate a text message, note, or email to your iPhone, it stays on device.
- Back Tap-To perform acts such as taking a screenshot, accessing the Control Center, raising the volume, and more, you can double or triple tap the back of the iPhone with Back Tap. It's an accessibility feature, but it can be used by anyone.
- .Sound Recognition-Another aspect of accessibility, Sound Recognition is a beneficial feature for those who are difficult to hear because it enables the iPhone to listen to noises such as fire alarms, smoke, animals, door bells, running water, crying, and more. It is very reliable and sends a warning whenever a sound is detected by the iPhone.
- .Exposure Lock-Serious iPhone photographers would be delighted to learn that iOS 14 allows an exposure compensation value to be locked in for a whole picture or video session with different controls to lock camera focus and exposure for a single shot.
- HomeKit Control Center-The Control Center in iOS 14 will access your favourite HomeKit scenes, plus there is an extended HomeKit interface that you can access with a tap to make it easier than ever to control smart home items.
- Custom Widget Stacks-In iOS 14, Apple has introduced Home Screen widgets, so you can pull them directly from the Today Center and onto the main iPhone display. Better still, Apple created Widget Stacks, so on the Home Screen you can create one widget space that houses multiple widgets that you can swipe between.
- Video QuickTake-Have an iPhone XR or an iPhone XS? Good news, you can use the QuickTake video feature on iOS 14 that was added to iPhone 11 and 11 Pro by Apple. To capture a fast video, you can hold down the capture button in picture mode without taking precious seconds to switch to video mode. QuickTake also works with the Volume Down button on iOS 14.
- In Apple Music, "For You" is now "Listen Now" in Apple Music, providing more recommendations than ever for what you would want to listen to. Search includes genre-based and mood-based recommendations, and playlists also feature animated artwork. For Apple Music users, it's a solid update.
- Continue to play Apple Music-There is also another new Apple Music feature so fantastic that it deserves its own bullet point-continue to play. Apple Music will now automatically play something similar when you listen to a single song or a playlist and the music stops, so that there's no dead air.
This list is by no means comprehensive, and we'll highlight in the future a lot of other cool features included in iOS 14. In the comments below, let us know if you have a favourite new change to iOS 14.
