What's New in iOS 14 Maps: Directions for cycling, guides, location refinements and more

With every iOS update, Apple always adds new functionality to its built-in software, and iOS 14 is no exception. Many apps have major new features, including Apple Maps, which gains directions for cycling, EV routes, guides, and more.

This guide highlights all of the new features that Apple has added to the Maps app in the iOS and iPadOS 14 updates.

Cycling Directions

For the first time, Maps in iOS 14 provides bike riders with cycling instructions, placing it on par with Google Maps. To get you where you need to go, cycling directions take into account bike lanes, bike paths, and bike-friendly roads.

You can preview the elevation for your path so that you know how complicated it is going to be to see how busy the traffic on the streets is. There are ways for avoiding steep slopes or stairs where your bike will have to be transported.

In watchOS 7, cycling instructions apply to the Apple Watch with maps that include voice guidance and instructions that make it easy to navigate with just a glance.

Cycling directions are limited to a handful of cities that include New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Beijing, and Shanghai.

Routes With EV Stops

When you have an electric car that is compatible with the iPhone, when you schedule a ride, Maps will automatically add charging stops to your path.

When generating an approximate time of arrival, the EV route option would also account
for time spent charging, and the Maps app is able to keep track of the current charge
and type of charger to provide electric vehicle owners with personalised routes.

An electric vehicle needs to be compatible with the iPhone to use this feature, and it is

not an option available without an EV, so it will not work when planning a trip with a

friend who, for example, uses an electric vehicle.

Right now, routes with EV stops work with vehicles from BMW and Ford.

Guides

Apple has added "Collections" to iOS 13, a feature that allows you to build lists of places

to visit for yourself or for friends and family. Collections "was renamed to" Guides "in ⁇

iOS 14."

On a computer running iOS / iPadOS 14 (or macOS Big Sur), you can continue to make

your own guides, but Apple also now provides a curated range of guide choices

developed by trusted brands.

Guides provide recommendations for the best places to visit in a region , providing

suggestions for places to eat, shop, and explore. It is possible to save Guides to Maps

and automatically update them as new locations are added.

Lonely World, the Washington Post, AllTrails, The Infatuation, and more are

some of Apple's Partners for Guides.

Redesign Expansion

Last year, Apple began rolling out an updated map design for elements such as

highways, houses, parks , beaches, marinas, woods, and more with more detail, and

these updated map designs are expanding to new locations in iOS 14.

As of 2019, the revised maps have spread across the United States and are
now spreading to Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Speed Cameras

Apple will now let you know when you approach them whether there are speed cameras

and red-light cameras along your path. An choice is also available to see where the

cameras on the map are located.

Refine Location

You can use the latest refined position function to get a highly accurate location reading

to help orient yourself if you are in an urban area where GPS does not work well and

maps do not always register you in the right location.

Using the Look Around feature included in iOS 13, Refine position will ask you to use

your iPhone to search buildings nearby to narrow down where you are at.

Refine locations are limited to areas like San Francisco , New York, Boston , Chicago,

Houston, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Washington , DC, as well as Oahu in Hawaii, since it

uses Look Around. Place matching is done on the computer with the refined location

function.

Congestion Zones

In places where traffic can be poor, some major cities like Paris and London use

congestion zones to decrease traffic. Maps in iOS 14 indicate congestion zone tolls and, if

needed, include options for routing around them.

There are also cities that restrict access by licence plate to some high traffic roads, and

Apple Maps now now supports licence plate information so that you can decide whether

on a given day you are permitted to use a route.
