Apple iPhone 13 rumours, release date, specs and features

(Pocket-lint) - The iPhone's annual update is one of the biggest tech events: it's the phone that many aspire to buy, one that sets trends and the phone that everybody else is waiting for.

Although leaks and rumours are nothing new to the tech world, it is fairly uncommon to get details about unannounced Apple products. They don't seem to leak as deeply as a Samsung or Google phone - but right here we're collecting everything we hear about the 2021 iPhone versions.

Apple iPhone 13 release date and price

In the second week of September, and usually on a Tuesday, Apple typically holds its iPhone case. If 2020 had been a normal year, the iPhone 12 would likely have been launched on 8 September 2020.

Of course, the global situation has not made 2020 a typical year. Instead, on 13 October, Apple released the iPhone 12 series, breaking the trend and making it more difficult to decide when the event would take place for the iPhone 13.

The iPhone 13 event will take place on 7 September if the pattern returns to normal by 2021. Of course, nothing has been confirmed yet, nor will it be until the end of August 2021, at least.

We'd expect the iPhone 13 series to start about the same as the iPhone 12 range in terms of price.

What will the iPhone 2021 be called?

  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
It was pretty easy to guess what the next iPhone will be named prior to 2017. Apple used sequential numbers after the iPhone 3G until the iPhone 8, and that was that.

With the introduction of the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020, the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will possibly be named the 2021 iPhones, if there are four iPhones again.

Design

  • Similar design
  • Squarer edges
The versions of the Apple iPhone 12 come with a revamped design, offering more square edges like the iPhone 4 or 5. Therefore the iPhone 13 models are likely to stick to this design as it would be rare to update the design for two years running.

We hope to see a decreased notch at the top of the 2021 models' panel, though or better yet no notch at all. For a notch-less handset, a patent was previously filed, but how Face ID can be accommodated remains a mystery.

Displays

  • All OLED
  • 120Hz refresh rate
It is possible that the iPhone 13 models will also all have OLED screens with the iPhone 12 models all offering OLED displays.

For the iPhone 12 models, there were rumours of a variable refresh rate with a 120Hz refresh rate that could drop down to 60Hz when required, but this never happened, so maybe on the 2021 models it would be something we will see.

A 5.4-inch model, two 6.1-inch models and a 6.7-inch model come with the iPhone 12 series. With the monitor sizes shifting for 2020, we'd predict they will remain the same for 2021, but you never know.

In-display fingerprint sensors for the iPhone 12 models were also suggested in some speculation. Since this has never existed, this is maybe something that the iPhone 13 models will look to incorporate alongside Face ID.

Cameras

  • Pro models likely to be better
  • Improvements likely
There are currently no reports about the iPhone 13 model cameras, but we expect Apple will stick to providing a better camera setup on the iPhone 13 Pro models. However we are hoping to see the regular iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max again offering the same.

We will also expect adjustments around the board, but it is not clear at the moment what these might be.

Hardware and software

  • 5G
  • A15 chip
  • iOS 15
The iPhone 13 models will no doubt do the same with the iPhone 12 series offering 5G. They will also all likely run on the A15 chip and iOS 15 app, the latter of which we will most likely learn more about in June 2021.

Other features of hardware and software have yet to be detailed in rumours, but over the coming months, we expect to learn more.

Rumors about Apple iPhone 13: What has happened so far?

Here is what we've heard so far about the iPhone 13 models.

18 October 2020: In-display fingerprint sensor and Face ID may be available for iPhone 13:

A report published by BGR indicates that a leaker said that, alongside Face ID, the iPhone 13 could feature Touch ID under the display.

26 August 2020: Video leaks, with high refresh rate settings, tend to reveal

A video that appears to show a leaked display of the iPhone 12 Max. For the Pro and Pro Max, the video appears to confirm the high-refresh rate settings. With this not being offered by the iPhone 12 Pro Max, maybe it's a feature we'll see on the iPhone 13 Pro models.

3 July 2020: iPhones can receive higher 120Hz refresh rate displays by 2021

Analyst Ross Young said his contacts believe the 2021 iPhone series could come with 120Hz technology.

20 April 2020: Incoming Smaller Notch

Several sources suggested a smaller notch for the iPhone 12, but all the Face ID sensors would be present. Essentially, this will only mean that the speaker is pushed upwards through the phone's bezel, as it has been on many Android devices.

Since this wasn't supported by the iPhone 12 models, all eyes are now on the iPhone 13 models.

31 December 2019: Apple's Notch-free phone patent filed

Apple's patents have appeared for a notch-free phone, but it raises the question of how Apple can provide Face ID if there is no place for the hardware required.

30 September 2019: No notch notch on Apple iPhone makes

Some renders were created by Ben Geskin, showing what the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max would have looked like if the notch went missing. Just in case Apple makes this change for the iPhone 13 models, we left them here.

5 September 2019: In-screen sensor developed by Apple

Apple is developing an in-display fingerprint authentication technology, according to Bloomberg, that works much like the solutions we have seen implemented by Samsung, OnePlus, Huawei, and others.

It will possibly be a Touch ID-branded feature that would work alongside Face ID, enabling users to bypass the lock screen of their smartphone more easily and process payments.

5 August 2019: Touch ID Long Live! In-display fingerprint software may be used for the Apple 2021 iPhone

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported Apple will likely sell an Ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 2021. The device will operate alongside Apple's Face ID, Kuo said.

He also said that for the 2020 iPhone - which it didn't - the notch would get smaller before being completely ditched for the 2021 iPhone.

11 July 2019: By 20211, the iPhone will have its front cameras on display.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the big notch of the iPhone is going to vanish entirely by 2021.

Kuo does not clarify how Apple could succeed in this but one way would be to transfer the True Depth camera device behind the monitor, which is used for Face ID. At the moment, there are major problems with this technology, so maybe there is another solution?
