Apple Is Ramping up Efforts to Create a Search Engine Alternative to Rival Google

While Google is currently paying Apple between $8-$12 billion by default to retain its search engine, it doesn't mean that when it comes to planning a search engine of its own, the California-based giant is not trying its luck. As U.S. antitrust regulators continue to target a lucrative agreement between Apple and Google that holds the default option on Apple devices from Google's search engine, it seems that the latter wants to decrease its reliance on the advertising giant in the future.

A article behind a paywall conversation from the Financial Times spotted by MacRumors talks about some improvements made in iOS 14. The important details are described below.

"Apple has started to display its own search results and connect directly to websites when users type queries from its home screen in a little-noticed update to the new version of the iPhone operating system, iOS 14.

According to several individuals in the industry, the web search capability marks a significant advance in the in-house creation of Apple and could form the basis of a fuller assault on Google.

The business in Silicon Valley is notoriously proprietary about its internal ventures, but the move adds to increasing proof that it is trying to create a successor to the search engine of Google."

It's not like Apple, though working on its company, is sitting idle. John Giannandrea, Google's former search manager, was hired by the company two years ago to develop the capabilities of artificial intelligence. In addition, his position included tweaking and enhancing Siri, with the report citing Apple's 'frequent' search engineer job advertisements as evidence pointing to the search ambitions of Apple.

The Financial Times also addressed Applebot's increased operation, which happens to be Apple's web crawler. Applebot works to boost search results for Siri as well as Spotlight, but it could also be tweaked and allow the iPhone giant to launch a Google search engine rival in the future.

It was back in August of this year the last time there was a story about Apple working to launch its search engine. Although rumors' have been clear about Apple's plans in order to really know about its search engine alternative, we will have to wait for the company's official confirmation.
