Beats Powerbeats Pro vs Apple AirPods Pro: Which should you choose?

(Pocket-lint) - The newest pair of wireless headphones from Apple-owned Beats comes in the form of the Powerbeats Pro, which provides much of the same characteristics as the second generation of Apple AirPods and the latest AirPods Pro.

We compared the Beats Powerbeats Pro with the AirPods 2 and the AirPods Pro in order to help you figure out which wireless headphones might be right for you. If you do not believe the Beats are for you, you can also read how the AirPods compare to each other.

What's the same?

  • H1 chip for simple setup with Apple devices
  • Automatic ear recognition
  • Use one or two
  • Hey Siri support on iOS devices
  • Answer calls
On the H1 chip, the Apple AirPods 2, AirPods Pro and Beats Powerbeats Pro all run and all provide one-tap configuration with Apple devices. When you open their charging case, the AirPods and the Powerbeats Pro will automatically be recognized by an Apple computer. All headphones will seamlessly connect to any other Apple device associated with your Apple ID after one tap.

When they are removed from your ear, all headphones will also automatically pause and play when they are placed back in, and you can choose to wear one AirPod or one Powerbeats Pro, or both. They all all offer support for Hey Siri, and without touching your phone, it is also possible to answer calls on all pairs of headphones.

What's different between Beats Powerbeats Pro and Apple AirPods Pro?

Price

For the regular charging case, Apple AirPods 2 typically start at $159 or £159. With the wireless charging case, this price rises to $199 or £199 for the AirPods.

In general, the Beats Powerbeats Pro costs £ 219.95.

Apple AirPods Pro usually cost $249 or £249, and as a regular, they come with a wireless charging case.

Design

Both pairs look totally different from Apple AirPods and Beats Powerbeats Pro. The Beats headphones have a more sporty look and have an adjustable ear hook, making them especially safer for working out compared to the AirPods 2. At the top of each ear piece, they have physical controls and the 'b' can be moved for voice control to be enabled.

A tiny earpiece with a stem below is available for the AirPods 2, resembling a very small electric toothbrush head. On them, they have no physical controls, with volume controlled instead through the connected computer. Depending on what you have installed, you can double-tap the side to play/pause a track, skip a track, go back a track, or launch Siri.

The AirPods Pro looks similar to the AirPods 2, but they have a three-size silicone ear tip and a smaller stem. There are no physical controls again, but the stem has a force sensor built in that allows for more controls to switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes than the AirPods 2, such as pressing and holding.

Colours

Apple AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro can only be accessed in white. There are four colours of the Beats Powerbeats Pro, namely Black, Ivory, Moss and Navy.

Sweat resistance

Apple doesn't say the AirPods 2 are immune to sweat or water, but we've worn them running and we've had no problems. The AirPods Pro is IPX4 immune to sweat and water with an IP ranking.

Beats reports that Powerbeats Pro is immune to sweat and water, but it does not have an official IP ranking.

Battery life

Three hours of talk time and five hours of listening time are promised by the second generation of Apple AirPods, which is identical to the AirPods Pro with 3.5 hours of talk time and 4.5 hours of listening time. However, the Beats Powerbeats Pro promises an enormous battery life of nine hours.

In a carrying case that provides multiple charges of up to 24 hours of listening time, all headphones are compared here. These cases of charging are all charged by Lightning. A wireless charging case is also available for the AirPods 2, but this costs extra, while the AirPods Pro are standardly fitted with a wireless charging case.

Audio quality

The AirPods 2 don't deliver anything too fancy when it comes to audio quality, but they are much better than the typical wired choices that come with iPhones.

However, Active Noise Cancellation as well as Adaptive EQ are available on board the AirPods Pro. They also have a Transparency mode that allows you to hear your surroundings while still listening to your favourite songs.

There is complex sound and noise isolation on board the Beats Powerbeats Pro.

Declining a call

Although a call to Apple AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro can be answered by tapping the side of one of the AirPods, a call cannot be declined. You can reject a call on the Beats Powerbeats Pro headphones though. Pressing and holding "b" will allow you to continue without interruptions to listen or work out.

Conclusion

In terms of some of the features they provide, the Apple AirPods 2, AirPods Pro and Beats Powerbeats Pro are comparable, including super easy setup for Apple users and Hey Siri support.

Of the three wireless headphones compared here, the AirPods Pro are the most pricey, but they come with Active Noise Cancellation, different silicone tips for a safe fit, sweat and water resistance, and advanced on-device controls.

In terms of price, the Powerbeats Pro sits in the center and provides physical controls, resistance to sweat and water, more colours and a stronger battery life.

Of the three headphones in this function, the AirPods 2 are the cheapest choice, but they do not offer as many features as the other two. The Beats Powerbeats Pro or AirPods Pro are likely to be the devices you pick between for those looking for headphones to work out in, while the AirPods 2 might be enough if you just want some wireless headphones.
