Best baby monitors 2021: Top baby cams to buy for audio and video

(Pocket-lint) - It can be a perfect way to get some peace of mind without having to hang over them at all hours to keep an eye on your young people remotely, even when you're all at home - at a time when you're likely to be more than a little exhausted already. In the course of time, old-school baby monitors have undergone some serious updates.

In reality, when it comes to baby monitors, there's a huge amount of choice, and while choice is awesome, it can sometimes be a little daunting - particularly when you have a baby to think about too.

In our time, we have reviewed a range of baby monitors and while we don't do complete reviews on them, we have a decent idea of which ones, based on our experience, we will recommend for audio and video quality. The top baby monitors to consider are here.

Our top baby monitor recommendations

BT Smart Baby Monitor with 5-inch Screen

The 5-inch BT Smart Baby Monitor may not have the most catchy name, but it provides both a handheld parent device, as they are usually called, and access to the best of both worlds via a smartphone app. The parent unit screen is great and detailed enough to see a baby breathing, while night vision is beautiful and clear and the battery life is excellent.

If your little one slips out of view, it's possible to change the camera angle remotely - helpful if you don't want to go into their room and risk waking them up - and if you have more than one kid or infant, you can add more cameras and view them on the same parent unit. A small delay is the only drawback, and the mobile version is not as user-friendly as the Arlo Baby below.

Arlo Baby

Arlo Baby has a lovely style - by far the cutest of all the baby monitors we've tried - and there are various different rubber skins you can buy separately to make it even better. There's no parent unit - this is one of the Arlo Baby's only downsides and there is also a slight pause but it provides a great picture quality, with clarity that is second to none.

The quality of the audio is also great and the software is very simple to use, offering a range of features, from pinching on the video stream to zooming in, playing lullabies and tracking the air, humidity and temperature of the room. Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple's Siri are all compatible with the Arlo Baby, which leads to a range of additional features, such as streaming video to a Nest Hub or Echo Show.

Kodak Cherish C525 Video Baby Monitor

The Kodak Cherish C525 includes both a mobile app and a parent device, like the 5-inch BT Smart Monitor with Display, giving you versatility when it comes to checking on your little one. Like the BT model, the 5-inch screen is nice and wide and it offers excellent quality, especially during the day.

While the design of the camera is not as adorable as the Arlo Baby, the Kodak Cherish C525 is definitely more interesting than many others on this list and there is also a great feature set, including the ability to pan and tilt the camera remotely so that if they move out of view, you don't have to interrupt your baby by going in to change the camera.

Nest Cam IQ

Google's Nest Cam IQ is not just a baby monitor, it's a smart home camera, but if you want it to be, it could easily be used as a baby monitor. Especially compared to baby monitors, it is not inexpensive, but it offers fantastic audio and video quality, as well as excellent night vision and a built-in two-way talk and lullaby speaker.

You won't get a parent unit because it's not a baby monitor, but the Nest Cam IQ has familiar face detection (if you pay for Nest Aware), the application is very intuitive, it works smoothly with Google Home devices, allowing you to stream the video on a Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max, and it also works with Alexa. Also, the style is lovely and clean. The Nest Cam IQ might be a great choice for you if you have Nest items already and you have the budget.

Philips Avent SCD620

The SCD620 Philips Avent has a beautiful, simple design that will be ideal for some. There's a great battery life on board, quickly getting you on a full charge during the night if you forget to plug it in and there's a decent range too, for example, in case you want to carry the display into the garden.

The display on the parent unit is not the largest and on board there is no zoom capability, nor is there any smartphone power, but the parent unit interface is simple to use and the battery life is really great, even if the image quality is not as good.

Motorola MBP50

Motorola has a few different baby monitors, but if you're lying in bed and you have the unit on a bedside table, the MBP50 has a lovely large display on its parent unit, which is curved in shape, offering great viewing angles.

With Arlo Baby, image quality is not up there and there is no mobile app control or fancy Google Assistant or Alexa integration, but the Motorola MBP50 provides decent enough image quality, an easy-to-use interface and is not too costly compared to some.

Hello Baby HB32

If you've been doing a lot of research on baby monitors, you may not have heard of the brand Hello Baby, but the Hello Baby HB32 is very easy to use and it's great value for money - coming in considerably cheaper than others out there.

Night vision is very strong and the parent unit's battery life is excellent, but there is no smartphone control, unlike the BT or Kodak choices, so if you select this one, you will have to do with only a parent unit, so no checking on the baby while you're out for the night, for instance.

Nuk Eco Control Video Display 550VD

Nuk is another brand that you may not have heard of until you have a baby, but in its product portfolio, it provides a baby monitor. The 550VD Eco Control Video Monitor is not the cheapest on this list and it has a pretty tiny screen, but thanks to this, it has an excellent battery life.

A function called Patrol Mode will allow you to see span from any additional cameras you have, maybe from any other kids, but viewing angles and night vision are not the best of the bunch, so keep that in mind if you want this one.

Angelcare AC1300

Not only does Angelcare have a variety of baby monitors, but the company also provides sensor mats designed to track the movement and breathing of a baby. The Angelcare AC1300 is one of the company's baby monitors that comes with a sensor mat, while also having a great range and excellent zoom capabilities.

The parent unit's battery life is not the best out there and there are no thrills - such as integration with Google or Alexa - but the Angelcare AC1300 has a fine, transparent display and the motion monitor would make a perfect addition for those parents who want it.
