Best Chromebook 2021: Our option for kindergarten, college and more of the best Chrome OS laptops

(Pocket-lint) - In search of a new Chromebook, eh? Chromebooks have been becoming more and more popular, and are available on laptops like HP, Acer and Asus from many big names.

Education has become a major demand for tablets as well, but they're also perfect for Gmail, Google Docs and web browsing for a basic home laptop.

Chrome OS is Google's alternative to Windows and is, in essence, a more complicated variant of the desktop Chrome browser. It is ridiculously easy to use, updates itself and avoids the frustration and difficulty that Windows and macOS sometimes hobble. That said, it is less capable than other operating systems for professional use. But it offers more than sufficient features for most users at home or in school.

Our pick of the best Chromebooks to buy today

Pixelbook Go

The Pixelbook Go is a massively impressive entry at a lower price point (although it's still expensive for a Chromebook) if you're impressed by the Pixelbook line but have a tighter budget. It's a beautifully built computer that makes some brilliant decisions, such as the bottom side of the unit's ripple texture.

It also has incredible power under the hood to make sure you feel like you are using a more premium machine than the price suggests, and we rate it comfortably as one of the best Chromebooks we have ever used.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3

This brand new IdeaPad Flex 3 sits at the lower end of Lenovo's Chromebook range.

This great entry-level laptop, an 11-inch laptop with an IPS monitor, is powered by an Intel Celeron processor though, in addition to a plethora of ports, there is up to 10 hours of battery life on board - two USB-A, a USB-C and an audio jack.

We would suggest this 64 GB option, although it is available with 32 GB of storage.

Asus Chromebook Flip C434

The Flip C434 is a more recent entry in Asus's Chromebooks series, a fantastic 2-in-1 that feels very premium while still nicely undercutting the price of the Pixelbook. For a laptop, it has the Holy Triumvirate, a solid screen, a decent keyboard, and an incredible battery life.

The trackpad lets the team down a little, but it works very well and has excellent ports. Plus, in various contexts, it is very adaptable and useful with the option to use it like a tablet.

Acer 714 Chromebook

For your Chromebook purchase, Acer is a great option, and while this 714 has a bit of a utilitarian design, in our chosen edition, there is a strong dual-core Intel Core i3 processor along with 128 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM.

There's a full HD monitor, too, powered by UHD 620 graphics from Intel.

What's more, without your password, there is an integrated fingerprint reader for accessing the laptop.

HP Chromebook 14 G5

For portable usability, there's nothing better than the Chromebook 14 G5. In order to provide seamless compatibility with Google apps, this machine deploys the stable, intuitive Chrome OS, and the HD webcam and noise-cancelling microphone gives you confidence when collaborating.

The Chromebook is powered by Intel's latest generation of Celeron processor and has a responsive, spill-resistant keyboard, 802.11ac wireless networking and 8 GB of memory.

    Acer Chromebook 11

If you're looking at the end of the market budget, then a Chromebook is a wise choice. Over the course of time, the Chrome OS operating system has evolved greatly, with both online and offline use available, including the ability to run Play Store applications.

Sure, with its plastic finish, the Acer Chromebook 11 is not going to carry design excitement, but it's acceptable for the price point. In addition, it is smartly made, a 360-degree hinge is compact so the screen can be mounted as you like, and it also works for several hours at a time.

If your school or college season is coming and you don't have a lot of money, then this is a clever purchase to make up for your homework.

    Asus Chromebook Flip C436

How much do you want for a Chromebook? One of the most costly Chromebooks we have reviewed to date, priced at just under a grand, is the Asus Chromebook Flip C436.

It's a luxury Chromebook with style appeal, but its high-end spec is not as useful as a comparable Windows computer in Chrome OS and is therefore somewhat more difficult to recommend than the above C434.
