Best PlayStation controller 2021: Pick up an extra PS4 or PS5 game pad

(Pocket-lint) - From the original DualShock and its three follow-ups all the way down to the fantastic new DualSense, the PS5 controller, Sony is not afraid of change when it comes to the controllers it sends out alongside every iteration of its iconic PlayStation consoles.
However, outside of a few packs, consoles only come with one controller, so most people will soon find that they need a second pad for co-op gaming or playing on the sofa against their mates. Or you might have worn out your new controller, or you might like a few extra advantages, such as customization and even additional keys. We've picked some of the best available right here if you're looking for a new pad to go with your PS5 or PS4. For now, however, remember that only DualSense currently operates on the latest console with PS5 titles, before new pads reach the market.
Our pick of the best PS4 or PS5 controller
Sony DualSense
The latest in Sony's long line of great controllers is perhaps its best yet and having a second DualSense to go with your PS5 makes tonnes of sense.
Haptic feedback and triggers have been upgraded by the controller to boost immersion while you play, plus an on-board microphone for more opportunities to communicate with games and friends. It's got an eye-catching colour system, too. However be warned - it will not work on your PS4!
Razer Raiju Ultimate

The Razer Raiju Ultimate is your best chance, a supreme wireless pad if you have a PlayStation 4 for now, and want to give yourself a leg up on the competition in online games or get more choices for solo adventures.
It's a serious, more costly piece, but it's targeted at serious gamers, with four additional programmable buttons to give you fine control as you play, and buttons and triggers that just feel better to use than Sony's own things. It's also soft and chunky compared to the DualShock 4, making it very comfortable. It is an added bonus to be able to change out the thumbsticks and D-Pad quickly according to your preference.
This is the controller of an enthusiast, but we have enjoyed our time using it so much that it would feel like a wrench to go back to a stock DualShock 4. Be warned, however that the Raiju will only work on the PS5 with PS4 games.
Sony DualShock 4
If you're still on PS4 but don't want to spend too much, there's nothing quite like the old DualShock 4 classic - it's a very nice gamepad, and the best official pad Sony had made for our money when it was published.
It has excellent thumbsticks and the clear advantages of wireless and smooth console connections. It should be remembered, though, that it will only work with the PS5 in a restricted way - to be exact, when you play backward-compatible PS4 games on the new console. That means that it's hardly the most forward-looking investment right now.
Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro

In the form of the excellent Revolution Unlimited, Nacon's got a real contender for your PS4 against the Razer pad we've featured above. It's a fantastic wireless pad that carries a lot of the customization you may be looking for like weights to alter its total heft!
PowerA Fusion Pro
While this will only work for PS4 games on the PS5, like all the other third party choices, it's the closest we've tried to the DualSense in shape and scale.
You get extra paddle buttons on the back, and you can easily pick how many to keep attached, as well as very good and tactile trigger stops, plus easier-to-click buttons. It's also a very comfortable pad, and it easily connects via Bluetooth. This would be much more of a stormer if complete PS5 compatibility had been unlocked.
Scuf Impact

However we're not sure anything can hold a candle to Scuf's PS4 controllers when it comes to true customization, which allows you to choose virtually any feature that goes into them. That means thumbsticks, colours, textures, back-paddles, D-Pads, and more.
To be honest, that is also what slightly holds it back. It can be slightly daunting to remember, and the more you add bells and whistles, you'll also notice the cost of the pad going up very steeply. Even at the end of the process, you'll get a pro-level controller.
RegeMoudal Wireless PS4 Gamepad

This is a great choice from RegeMoudal if you want to replace a DualShock 4 for your PS4 and are keen to get wireless compatibility without necessarily shelling out for the complete price of an official gamepad.
It's chunky and easy to wear, and without costing too much at all, it does everything you would expect from a gamepad. It also has good grip and good battery life, making it a very strong option if you want something more affordable.
