Best tablet 2021: Top tablets to buy today

(Pocket-lint) - You've come to the right place if you're looking for the perfect new tablet to purchase.

Although the iPad is big in this group, there is still plenty of options for both large and small tablets.

We're returning to the issue of protection for our final entry, though. Skiing and snowboarding are extremely fun, but there's also no doubt that they're a more dangerous darn sight than any other pastimes. Crashing is one thing, but when you're up in the mountains, there's a chance of a background avalanche, which is a little scary, especially if you're off-piste.

And while we have a list of 2-in-1s below, if you want even more we have a separate guide as well.

Know that the newest doesn't necessarily equal best in tablets - the tablet category travels a lot slower than phones, so it's still worth considering a tablet that's even a few years old. Here are the best tablets, ordered by size, to consider.

Amazon Fire 7

For its style, the Amazon Fire 7 won't win any awards, but it offers a solid build, excellent value for money and smooth integration with your Amazon account. Its screen quality is not the best, it is not the fastest to charge and the battery life could be better, but for anyone looking for a tablet for kids, the Fire 7 is easy to recommend.

If you want something bigger for browsing and shopping than your tablet, or watching catch-up TV or movies in bed, then Fire 7 is a great option. It's such an affordable tablet that it's almost disposable. As a bedside companion or children's travel pacifier, the Fire 7 should be one of the first devices you consider.

Amazon Fire 8 HD

Between Amazon's extremely good value Fire 7 and the larger Fire HD 10, the Fire HD 8 lies in a sweet spot. While the Fire HD 8's efficiency and features improve those of the Fire 7, it can also outlast the Fire HD 10, making it a slightly more appealing proposition for those who want to fly with it.

For entertainment especially for those who are Prime members, where the value for money can not be contested, the Fire HD 8 positions itself well. The Fire HD 8 is well worth considering, whether you're a globetrotter, looking for a travel tablet, or just something to entertain your kids. There's very little else at this price point that comes close.

Apple iPad mini

The Apple iPad mini 5 is faster than its predecessor, slimmer and more accomplished. A beautiful, lightweight tablet with an anti-reflective screen coating that makes it ideal for watching movies, playing sports, and reading or writing on the go is now supremely strong and is as much iPad as many people would need.

The 2020 iPad mini maintains the most familiar features of the product, as well as unprecedented strength for its price point: the 7.9-inch screen size along with Touch ID. Expect Face ID, however to come to its successor.

The Apple iPad (2021) offers a 10.2-inch display, Smart Connector for keyboard and peripheral support as the entry point into the larger iPads. Compared to the more expensive iPads, such as Face ID, an anti-reflective display and True Sound, it lacks a few features from its list, but this tablet remains one of the most affordable tablets you can buy at this size.

For multi-tasking, it has the perfect value for applications and media consumption, an affordable price point, Apple Pencil support (first gen) and iPadOS. The iPad 10.2 (2021) is the ideal iPad choice for many, despite numerous other iPad choices, as there is no better entry-level tablet around.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e

Most of the fundamentals of Samsung's top-end Galaxy Tab S7+ are featured in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e, but for far less cost. It provides excellent speakers with a stunning bold OLED screen and a great battery life, along with a strong design - ideal for entertainment.

There is no stylus support and no 3.5mm headphone jack, but as far as its limitations go, that's pretty much so.

The Apple iPad Air (2021) is more expensive than the previous iPad 10.2, but without the name and Face ID, it's a lot like the more expensive iPad Pro models.

This iPad offers powerful and fast output, uniform bezels, power button touch ID, USB-C, all-day battery life, great features such as support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, and the iPadOS user interface just enhances the experience. The iPad Air (2021) is a very convincing offering with a decent price point.

Apple iPad Pro 12.9 (2021)

The Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch is a really excellent computer that offers a beautiful design, great display and brilliant performance that is really laptop-class. On top of an already pricey computer, the second-generation Apple Pencil and revamped keyboard might cost extra, but they are great additions.

On the go, this model is a natural replacement for laptops, making it simpler for a number of items, especially with the iPadOS user interface. It might not fully replace the laptop for everyone in the office world yet, but it's an excellent tablet overall.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+

The new flagship tablet from Samsung is an utter beast, and has a growing price tag to fit its specifications.

You get a fantastic screen and brilliant interiors to make the best all-round Android tablet right now for what is pretty obvious. That said, being the best tablet for Android does not make you the best tablet overall, or the best value indeed.

However, this is an enticing option if Android is your device of choice and you want a better experience with no budgetary restrictions.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 has a refined design, a lovely keyboard that offers an excellent screen and plenty of power for a great typing experience - even if you have to purchase it separately. Over the previous generation, battery life has improved and while this 2-in-1 tablet can get costly to the point where a laptop may really make more sense, it's a Windows gadget that's very well built to do something. The Surface Pro is a fantastic machine with an official Style Cover clipped into place that not only looks better than its competitors, but also brings less sacrifices than many.
