Comparison of Apple iPhone 12 vs 11 vs iPhone XR: What is the difference?

(Pocket-lint) - At an event in October, Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 series, with four versions to choose from: the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
In a separate feature, we compared the four phones, but here we look at how the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini compare to the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR of 2018.
Should you upgrade from the iPhone XR, or should you purchase the iPhone XR or iPhone 11 instead of the iPhone 12 or 12 mini if you have an older iPhone, because they are sold side by side?
Notice that the iPhone SE is also in the portfolio of Apple, so if you are happy to have the Touch ID Home button instead of Face ID, that's worth checking out.
Design
- iPhone 12 mini: 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4mm, 135g
- iPhone 12: 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4mm, 164g
- iPhone 11: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm, 194g
- iPhone XR: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm, 194g
Identical designs are present in the Apple iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12, varying only in scale. Both have flat rather than rounded aluminium bodies, both of which come with a notch at the top of their screens, and both have glossy glass backs with a dual rear camera setup in the top left corner.
Similar to the iPhone 12 models, the Apple iPhone 11 and iPhone XR both come in a range of colours, providing an aluminium frame and a glass back. At the top of both their screens, there is a notch too, but they have rounder edges than the versions of the iPhone 12.
It's the smallest and lightest iPhone 12 mini and it's a lovely size that fits comfortably in the pocket and is very easy to use with one hand. In terms of footprint and weight, the iPhone 11 and XR are similar, and are slightly bigger and heavier than the iPhone 12.
However, the iPhone XR is IP67 water-resistant, allowing it to be immersed for 30 minutes up to one metre, while the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are all IP68 certified, although the 12 models can manage depths of up to six meters for 30 minutes, while the 11 can only handle two meters.
Each of the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 has a dual rear camera with a matt glass camera housing to distinguish it from the rest of the glossy body. Meanwhile, the iPhone XR has a single rear camera.
IPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 11 and iPhone XR also vary in colour choices.
Display
- iPhone 12 mini: 5.4-inch, OLED, 2340 x 1080 pixel resolution, HDR, 1200nits
- iPhone 12: 6.1-inch, OLED, 2532 x 1170 pixel resolution, HDR, 1200nits
- iPhone 11: 6.1-inch, LCD, 1792 x 828 pixel resolution, no HDR, 625nits
- iPhone XR: 6.1-inch, LCD, 1792 x 828 pixel resolution, no HDR, 625nits
Both the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 have HDR OLED displays with a maximum brightness of 1200nits, and with plenty of punch and vibrancy, they are both beautiful. The iPhone 12 mini has a 5.4-inch display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels for a 476ppi pixel density, whereas the iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch display with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels for a 460ppi pixel density.
Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR have a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD display with a resolution of 1792 x 828 pixels, resulting in a 326ppi pixel density, so the iPhone 12 models are a bit clearer and more colourful.
There is True Tone technology in all four models being compared here, along with a broad colour gamut, and there is also Haptic Touch over 3D Touch.
There is no HDR on either the iPhone 11 or iPhone XR and they are not as bright as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, which is noticeable when positioned side by side. However, if you didn't have them side-by-side, both the 11 and XR still provide fantastic displays with sufficient luminosity.
Cameras
- iPhone 12 mini/iPhone 12: Dual rear camera (12MP wide angle and ultra wide angle), 12MP TrueDepth front camera
- iPhone 11: Dual rear camera (12MP wide angle and ultra wide angle), 12MP TrueDepth front camera
- iPhone XR: Single rear camera (12MP), 7MP TrueDepth front camera
Both the Apple iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 have a dual rear camera, consisting of an f/1.6 aperture 12-megapixel wide angle sensor and an f/2.4 aperture ultra-wide angle sensor. Performance in good weather are excellent and they are good in low light too, due to the slightly wider aperture, with Night Mode needing to kick in less than the iPhone 11.
The iPhone 11 also has a dual rear camera, consisting of an ultra-wide-angle 12-megapixel sensor with an f/2.4 aperture and a wide-angle sensor with a slightly narrower f/1.8 aperture compared to the iPhone 12 models. It still delivers great results, but in low light conditions, it uses Night Mode a little more, as described above.
There is optical image stabilization, a brighter True Tone flash and six-effect Portrait Lighting, as well as next-generation Smart HDR for pictures and Night Mode, all of which are also offered by the iPhone 12 models. However, on the front camera of the 12 models, Night Mode is also given.
The iPhone 12 models also have up to 30fps HDR video recording with Dolby Vision, which is enabled and kicks in automatically on the rear and front cameras. This is not offered by either the iPhone 11 or XR.
Meanwhile, the iPhone XR has a single 12-megapixel f/1.8 aperture rear camera, optical image stabilization and up to 5x digital zoom. For Portrait Lighting and first-gen Smart HDR for images, it also provides just three effects.
There is also a 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera system on the iPhone XR with an aperture of f/2.2 on the front, allowing for, among many other features, Face ID. At 30fps or 60fps, it provides 1080p video recording.
Meanwhile, iPhone 12 models and iPhone 11 have a front-facing 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera with f/2.2 aperture, next-gen Smart HDR for images, and 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps 4K video recording.
Hardware
- iPhone 12 mini/iPhone 12: A14 chip, 64/128/256, Dual SIM
- iPhone 11: A13 chip, 64/256/512GB storage, Dual SIM
- iPhone XR: A12 chip, 64/256/512GB storage, Dual SIM
Hardware is one of the key distinctions between the iPhone 12 models and the older iPhone 11 and iPhone XR. The iPhone 12 has a hardware bump, as you would imagine, switching from the A13 chip used in the iPhone 11 and the A12 chip in the iPhone XR to the A14 chip. All have fluid efficiency, but the models of the iPhone 12 are naturally faster, especially when it comes to gaming and other heavier tasks.
All four versions come with storage options of 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, and microSD for storage expansion is not available on any model.
Dual SIM with a nano-SIM and eSIM is also provided by all four devices and all devices are charged via Lightning, although the iPhone 12 models also have MagSafe on board. However, the iPhone 12 models do not come with a wall plug in the box and the charger from MagSafe is sold separately. Apple Pay is offered on all models.
There are 5G capabilities in the iPhone 12 models, while the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR are 4G only.
Price
- iPhone 12 mini: From $699
- iPhone 12: From $799
- iPhone 11: From $599
- iPhone XR: From $499
The Apple iPhone 12 mini starts at 699 dollars, which is the same as when the iPhone 11 began in 2019. The iPhone 12 starts at 799 dollars.
With the launch of the iPhone 12 phones, the Apple iPhone 11 now starts at $599.
The iPhone XR starts at 499 dollars, making it an option that is cheaper.
Conclusion
The Apple iPhone 12 has several iPhone 11 updates, with the processor, enhanced display, refined design and 5G features being the distinctions that stand out.
Therefore, upgrading from iPhone 11 to iPhone 12 would give a speed increase, enhancements to the camera, a notably improved display and a revamped interface. The same goes for the iPhone XR update, but all those variations are much more noticeable.
The iPhone 11 is a great smartphone if you're considering upgrading from an older iPhone, as is the iPhone XR - and both are really good value now - so chances are you'll be satisfied with either if the iPhone 12 is out of your budget. That said, you're not going to be disappointed if you can stretch your iPhone 12 mini. It's a pocket powerhouse and it's very refreshing in its small and light scale.
