Google Nest Hub Max vs Nest Hub: clarification of the differences

(Pocket-lint) - The Nest Hub Max and Google Nest Hub, formerly Google Home Hub, are sold by Google as the two products in its smart display portfolio.
How do Google's two Nest Hubs compare with an almost identical architecture, apart from physical size? Here are the comparisons and distinctions.
For Black Friday, there are some excellent offers on both devices, so be sure to check out our feature for Nest Hub deals once you have determined which is right for you.
What's the same?
- Design
- Interface
- Features
Both Google Nest Hub Max and Google Nest Hub use the same design with a white-bezel screen that gives the appearance of floating on the base of the speaker. On the rear of the two units, a microphone on/off button is located at the top - this button also turns off the camera on the Nest Hub Max - while the volume controls on the rear are on the left.
The two devices have the same interface and have almost all the same functionality, including smart home power, built-in support for Chromecast, Google Assistant and its variety of deals, as well as access to YouTube.
What's different between the Nest Hub Max and the Nest Hub?
There are a few variations between the Google Nest Hub Max and the Google Nest Hub, despite providing an almost identical design, configuration and characteristics.
Display
- Nest Hub Max: 10-inch, 16:10, HD, touchscreen
- Nest Hub: 7-inch, LCD, touchscreen
There is a 10-inch touchscreen monitor on the Google Nest Hub Max, placing it in the same category as the Amazon Echo Show.
Meanwhile, the Google Nest Hub has a smaller 7-inch LCD touchscreen panel, falling into a category close to that of the smaller Echo Show 8.
Size
- Nest Hub Max: 250.1 x 182.55 x 101.23mm
- Nest Hub: 178.5 x 118 x 67.3mm
As the Google Nest Hub Max has a larger monitor, it's also a larger computer overall, unsurprisingly.
Compared to the Nest Hub measuring 178.5 x 118 x 67.3mm, it is quite a bit bigger, at 250.1 x 182.55 x 101.23mm, but the improvement in size makes it the better device for displaying content from around the room.
Sound
- Nest Hub Max: 2.1 speaker arrangement
- Nest Hub: Full-range speaker
The wider footprint of the Google Nest Hub Max allows for a 2.1 speaker configuration compared to the Home Hub's full-range speaker.
It means you get a bigger sound from the Nest Hub Max, and while the Nest Hub Max's sound doesn't fit speakers like the Sonos One, the Nest Hub is a huge improvement.
Camera
- Nest Hub Max: Built-in 6.5MP Nest camera
- Nest Hub: No camera
At the top of the show, the Google Nest Hub Max has a camera, which the Nest Hub does not. The Nest Hub has an ambient sensor in place of a camera to change the monitor brightness according to its surroundings.
The camera on the Nest Hub Max is a Nest camera, meaning that if you have a Nest Aware account, it provides much of the same features as the Nest Cam IQ, including intruder warnings. However, there are no recognized face warnings and no night vision, but the camera inside the Nest Hub Max is still a nice addition for those who still want the value of a security camera.
Without a Nest Conscious account, you can still see what's going on in the room you put the Nest Hub Max in, as well as use it for up to six people for Google Duo video calls and Face Match. It also allows for movements that are great to use, such as putting your hand up to pause or play music.
Features
- Nest Hub Max: Google Assistant, YouTube, Chromecast, smart home control, digital photo frame, music, Duo audio and video calls, gestures, Face Match, security camera
- Nest Hub: Google Assistant, YouTube, Chromecast, smart home control, digital photo frame, music, Duo audio calls
Many of the same features are provided by Google Nest Hub Max and Google Nest Hub, including control of any compatible smart home devices, YouTube access, Google Images show, music streaming, Netflix screening, and the multitude of features offered by Google Assistant.
However, the Nest Hub Max has a few additional features, thanks to the built-in Nest camera. Not only would you be able to engage in Duo video calls, but as a security camera, the Nest Hub Max doubles as well, while also providing Face Match and gesture control, as we described above.
Price
- Nest Hub Max: £219
- Nest Hub: £119
The Google Nest Hub Max normally costs £ 219, but for the additional £ 100 over the cost of the Nest Hub, you get quite a lot. It's also down to £ 169 on Black Friday at John Lewis in the UK.
When it was first introduced, the Google Nest Hub was priced at £ 139, but its price is now typically £ 119. However, for Black Friday, it was also reduced, coming in at £ 59.99 on John Lewis in the UK.
Colours
- Nest Hub Max: Chalk and Charcoal
- Nest Hub: Chalk, Charcoal, Aqua and Sand
Accessible in Chalk and Charcoal colours is the Google Nest Hub Max.
The Google Nest Centre, including Chalk and Charcoal, as well as Aqua and Sand, is available in four colours.
Conclusion
The Google Nest Hub Max is a much bigger, more costly version of the 7-inch Home Hub, but it offers plenty of extra cost-increasing features that are useful.
Not only does the built-in camera of the Nest Hub Max provide video calling via Google Duo, it doubles as a great security camera, while also providing gesture control and Face Match for up to six users, both of which are outstanding features.
The choice between these two devices will probably come down to where you want to put your Google-made smart display if the camera doesn't affect your vote. The smaller Nest Hub is ideal for a bedside table for the bedroom, while the Nest Hub Max is an impressive addition to a kitchen or living room.
