Halide Mark II-The next phase of iPhone photography

Halide, the popular iPhone camera app, has just received a new update called Halide Mark II, which includes a new interface, photo capture and RAW image processing improvements, professional tools that display expanded 14-bit dynamic range histograms and colour zebras, iPhone 12 model support, and much more.

If you have advanced photography experience and take pictures on an iPhone, chances are you're already acquainted with Halide. It is one of the App Store's finest photography apps that has full control over manual control such as aperture, focus, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. The developers have invested substantial effort with Halide Mark II on renovating their user interface, incorporating helpful gestures and adding functionality that both experienced and amateur photographers would enjoy.

Halide Mark II - New user interface

Halide Mark II has a clean interface that provides manual controls with easy access, but when not necessary, it tucks them away. Gestures and easy taps provide these manual controls with quick access. To fit well with the new iPhone 12 models, and even the smaller iPhone SE, the camera viewfinder and the photo reviewer have been completely revamped. Users can now see more details at a glance, especially in the photo reviewer, without having to tap through to reveal full metadata.

RAW Image Support

Before that, Halide embraced RAW image capture, but with Mark II, it went a step further. The developers say the app is ready for ProRAW, which will be launched by Apple in the iPhone 12 Pro software update. This is how ProRaw is explained by Apple:

"Along with the Apple image pipeline data, ProRAW gives you all the standard RAW information. So with noise reduction and multiframe exposure changes already in place, you can get a head start on editing, and have more time to tweak colour and white balance."

It's unclear how this upcoming feature, which is not out yet, is already supported by Halide, but we will soon find out more.

One of the latest features in this update is coverage, which captures machine photographs and RAW images in one go. This includes all that the iPhone does, including Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 3 and more and records it in a RAW DNG format so that it can be updated later.

Instant RAW, which is a juggling act between processed JPEGS and unedited RAW data, is the other new feature. More detail and colour than a JPEG is captured by Instant RAW, but also grain and noise, giving it a distinctive neutral look. It fits with all iPhone models that Halide supports, unlike ProRaw.

Instant RAW

In addition to these improvements, the software also brings new features such as coloured zebras, XDR analysis based on 14-bit RAW data for data visualization, RGB waveform for better manual exposure, and much more.

The software is available now with a 1-week free trial, with a $36 one-time purchase cost (currently available for $29.99). Customers will also get a $11.99 per year package (available at the moment for $9.99). Established users can upgrade to this enormous update free of charge.
