iOS 14 Overview

The new version of its iOS operating system, iOS 14, was launched by Apple in June 2020 and was released on September 16. IOS 14 is one of the biggest iOS updates to date by Apple, adding changes to the home screen design, major new features, existing app updates, enhancements to Siri, and several other tweaks that streamline the iOS interface.

First and foremost, iOS 14 brings a redesigned Home Screen that for the first time includes widget support. Widgets can be dragged right to the Home Screen from the Today view, and can be pinned in various sizes.

The iPhone can use on-device intelligence with a Smart Stack function to surface the correct widget based on time, location, and operation. You can view widgets personalised for work, travel, sports, and more on each Home Screen page. It has also revamped the Today section where widgets are hosted, and there is a gallery of widgets where users can select new widgets from apps and customise those widgets.

The new App Library opens by swiping all the way to the end of the app pages on an iPhone, which is an interface that displays all the applications on your iPhone to see everything at a glance. Apps are grouped into your folder structure, but files like Suggestions and Apple Arcade that intelligently surface apps are also generated by Apple. To keep your home screen cleaner, new app downloads can be added to your home screen or stored in the App Library.

New steps to save space mean incoming phone calls and the whole screen is no longer taken up by Siri requests. A small banner on the iPhone monitor displays phone calls (and FaceTime/VoIP calls), while Siri activation shows a small animated Siri icon at the bottom of the screen.

Users can watch videos or chat on FaceTime with an Image in Picture mode while still using other apps at the same time, with FaceTime or a video playing in a small window that can be resized and moved to any corner of the screen of the iPhone.

In iOS 14, Siri is smarter and can answer a larger variety of questions with knowledge pulled from around the internet, and audio messages can also be sent by Siri. Keyboard dictation runs on the computer, adding to the dictated messages an additional layer of privacy.

Apple has added Software Clips to iOS 14, enabling users to take advantage of certain functionality of the app without installing the entire app. App Clips will let you do stuff like rent a scooter, buy a coffee, make a restaurant reservation, or just scan a code to fill a parking metre, without the need to download a complete app.

Apple defines App Clips as just a "small part of an app experience" intended to be discovered when it is needed. App Clips work by app clip codes, NFC tags, or QR codes designed by Apple, and can also be exchanged in Messages or Safari.

Apple also lets users pin an important discussion to remain at the top of the app, talking about the Messages app. Messages can be pinned on any chat with a quick swipe to the right. To respond to a specific message in a conversation, a new inline reply function can be used, which is particularly useful in group chats.

Apple has introduced a @mention function for group chats, which implies that a group chat can be silenced but sends a warning when the name of a user is listed. With a picture or an emoji, group chat images can be personalised, and the icons at the top of a conversation for each person make it clear who was last speaking.

New Memoji choices include additional hairstyles, headwear, face covers, and ages, plus new embrace, fist bump, and blush Memoji stickers. Thanks to the improved facial and muscle structure, Memoji is more expressive than ever.

Paired with watchOS 7, iOS 14 allows parents, via Family Setup, to set up and manage cellular Apple Watches for their children, designed to let children use an Apple Watch without the need for an iPhone.

Apple also introduced Sleep Monitoring support on Apple Watch for the Fitness app, plus a Health Checklist for the management of health and safety features (Emergency SOS, Medical ID, Fall Detection, and ECG) and an extension to help users better understand how audio levels can affect hearing health.

There is information on extreme weather incidents, a next-hour precipitation map, and minute-by-minute precipitation readings when rain is forecast in the Weather app, all features taken from the acquisition of Apple's Dark Sky.

For bike riders and cyclists, the Apple Maps app has cycling directions, with the directions taking into account height, how busy a street is, and whether there are stairs along the road. There is an alternative for those owning electric vehicles to route with EV charging stops tailored for current types of vehicles and chargers.

For discovering new restaurants and attractions, a curated guide feature lists interesting places to visit in an area. Trusted brands like The Washington Post, AllTrails, Complex, Time Out Party, and more are producing guides.

Digital car keys allow users to unlock or start their car with an iPhone or Apple Watch, and the car keys allow users to unlock cars next year with the U1 chip without taking the iPhone out of a pocket or bag. If an iPhone is misplaced, the car keys can be exchanged via messages and disabled via iCloud.

CarPlay allows users to set wallpapers and it supports new types of applications for parking, charging electric cars, and ordering fast food.

With automation suggestions and Control Center quick access buttons, the Home app is smarter, plus an Adaptive Lighting function enables HomeKit lights to change their colour temperature during the day. Face Recognition on-device allows cameras and video doorbells to tell users exactly who is at the door (based on people stored in photos), and for the first time, HomeKit Safe Video cameras support Activity Zones.

There's a new Translate app designed by Apple that offers translations of text and voice to and from 11 languages. An On-Device Mode allows languages to be downloaded only for on-device translations, and a Communication Mode talks translations aloud so that users can talk to someone who speaks a foreign language and automatically recognises and correctly translates the language being spoken.

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish languages are supported.

Updated privacy provisions require developers to obtain permission to access devices on a local network prior to access, and new options are available to restrict access to select images or to offer only approximate location data to users. Before monitoring them through websites, all applications are often expected to get user approval, and new icons appear on the Home Screen when a camera or microphone is used by an app.

ios 14 imessage features

Later in the year, product pages of the App Store will include summaries of the self-reported privacy practises of developers offered in an easy-to-read format, and Apple is introducing a feature that enables current accounts to be upgraded to Apple Sign-in. Apple offers a Privacy Report in Safari that allows you to know which website trackers are being blocked.

Apple also adds Safari password tracking to let users know whether a saved password, along with a built-in Safari translation feature for web pages, has been involved in a data breach.

With iOS 14, AirPods can switch seamlessly and automatically between Apple devices with automatic device switching, and a new surround sound spatial audio feature, complete with dynamic head tracking, is available for AirPods Pro. IOS 14 also sends reminders when the battery is close to dying on AirPods or AirPods Pro.

Support for third-party items and accessories is included in the Find My app on iOS 14, so item trackers such as Tile can be directly found in the Find My app. As of now, no third-party trackers use the feature.

ios 14 incoming phone call

For other software, there are hundreds of tweaks and improvements. Apple Arcade supports cross-platform saving, developers can make family subscriptions to the App Store available, the Camera app has a new Exposure Compensation control, Images has new organising choices, Reminders has smart and fast entry recommendations, and it is possible to set third-party email and browser apps as default for the first time.
IOS 14 is compatible with iPhone 6s and later, ensuring that it runs on all iOS 13-enabled devices, and is available for download from September 16 onwards.

How to Download and Install iOS 14

iOS 14 is now available to all users with compatible devices, so you should see it in the Software Update section of the Settings app on your device.

Current Version

IOS 14.2.1, released to the public on November 19, is the latest iOS version. IOS 14.2.1 is a bug fix update that addresses bugs that prevented the reception of certain MMS messages and caused the iPhone 12 mini Lock Screen to become unresponsive. It also addressed a problem with some Made for iPhone hearing aids that caused sound quality problems.

.IOS 14.2.1 is a big update to iOS 14.2, which adds new emoji characters such as tear-smiling face, ninja, pinched fingers, anatomical heart, black cat, mammoth, polar bear, dodo, fly, bell pepper, tamale, bubble tea, wand, feather, hut, and more.

ios142emoji

Intercom support is also included in iOS 14.2, which transforms the HomePod, HomePod mini, and other devices into intercoms that can be used all over the home.

homepodminiintercom

There is a new Music Recognition toggle in the Control Center that incorporates the Apple-owned Shazam app into the iOS operating system, and in the Control Center there is a redesigned Now Playing widget that lists recently played albums that you may want to listen to while no music is playing.

iOS 14.3

For testing purposes, Apple has also seeded two betas for developers and public beta testers of the forthcoming iOS 14.3 update. The iOS 14.3 update gives the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max the ProRAW format. ProRAW is designed for those who prefer RAW shooting but also want to take advantage of the data from the Apple image pipeline, such as noise reduction and changes to multi-frame exposure.

apple proraw

For those who have installed iOS 14.3 beta on the latest iPhone 12 or Pro Max, the ProRAW feature can be activated in the Camera section of the Settings app. When activated, the upper right side of the camera app has a RAW toggle that can be tapped to turn it off or on. Images taken with ProRAW have a scale of 25MB.
The introduction of Fitness+, Apple's $9.99 a month fitness service designed to work with the Apple Watch, will likely be seen in iOS 14.3 and watchOS 7.2.
Ecosia can now be set as the default search engine on the iPhone and iPad, a search engine that plants trees when people perform searches.

shortcuts home screen banner

The iOS 14.3 update, while not a feature, hints at some potential product launches. There is an icon that can show the AirPods Studio's architecture, along with AirTags information and the Find My feature that is intended to incorporate third-party devices with the Find My app.

ios 14 3 headphones icon airpods studio

Code in iOS 14.3 shows that Apple is setting the groundwork for adding support in the Find My app for third-party item trackers and Bluetooth devices, enabling these devices to be monitored next to iPhones and iPads. What products will support the feature or when support will be rolled out is not yet clear, but we may soon hear additional details.

FindMyTileFeature

Other new features include health app pregnancy info, setup tips for third-party applications in some countries, support for scanning App Clips QR codes with the camera app, an option to update HomeKit items with the Home app, and more, with a complete list available in our features guide for iOS 14.3.

Home Screen Redesign

With the introduction of widgets, options to cover whole app pages, and the latest App Library that shows you everything you have installed at a glance, iOS 14 introduces a new design for the Home Screen that allows for much more flexibility.

Widgets

The Today Hub, accessible on the iPhone's monitor by swiping from left to right, has a whole new look with totally redesigned widgets.

ios14widgetgallery

To provide more features, widgets provide more data than ever and Apple has updated its widgets for default apps such as Calendar, Stocks, and Weather. There are also new Screen Time and Apple News widgets.
In the Widget Gallery, all of your widget choices can be accessed by long pressing on the monitor, selecting "Edit Home Screen" and then pressing the "+" button. The Widget Gallery's recommendations for the widget are focused on what users instal the most and software developers from third parties can build new widget experiences for their applications.

ios14homescreenwidgets

You can drag any widget out of the Today view and straight onto the Home screen, where it can be placed right next to the app icons. On the various Home Screen pages, you can have several widgets, arranged in the most convenient way for your needs.

Widget Sizes

Widgets come in small, medium and large sizes in the Today view and on the Home Screen, each with different densities of details. For instance, a small version of the Apple News widget shows only one storey, but three are shown in the larger version..

ios14widgetsizes

The information supplied with and widget size varies depending on the app, so to see what works best, it is worth playing with various sizes and configurations.

Widget Stacks

Both in the Today view and the Home Screen, you can stack up to 10 widgets on top of each other to better use space. You can move between them with a swipe if you pile up a lot of widgets.

ios14stacks

The feature provides maximum utility while taking up a minimal amount of space.

Widget Smart Stack

There is a separate Smart Stack feature that differs from the stacking of widgets. A Smart Stack, created in the Widget Gallery view, is a widget stack that automatically displays the best choice for the widget based on time, place, and operation.

ios14smartstack

For example, if you stack the Apple News widget, the Calendar widget, and the Maps widget, when you wake up, you can see Apple News so that you can catch the latest headlines, calendar events as they occur throughout the day and at night with Apple Maps.

It's essentially the same as a stack of widgets, but for you the iPhone swipes to make sure you look at what's most important. Naturally, you can swipe yourself through the Smart Stack.

Siri Suggestions Widget

There's a Siri Recommendations widget that uses on-device knowledge to surface recommended behaviours based on your iPhone user habits, separate from the Smart Stack. You can see the Podcasts widget at the right time if you still listen to a podcast on the train ride to work.

If the Starbucks app opens at 4 p.m., The Starbucks widget might appear when the time approaches to order an afternoon coffee each day. In the Siri widget, pressing a suggestion performs the operation without the need to open the programme.

Customized Home Screen Icons

Along with Home Screen customization widgets, iPhone users have found that the Shortcuts app will further customise their home screens with special icons.

You can create a shortcut for any app that replaces the regular app icon in Shortcuts, and you can select a custom picture to be used as the app icon. As illustrated in our article covering Home Screen customization choices, this opens up a realm of possibility for creative designs.

ios14homescreencustomization

App Library

The App Library is a fantastic new feature that displays all the applications that you have installed in a structured, easy-to-navigate view that is close to the Apple Watch app list view.

applibraryios14

To get past your home screen pages to the App Library view, swipe all the way from right to left, where and app you have installed is automatically sorted into folder categories such as Services, Efficiency, Education, Inspiration, Reference and Reading, Social, Health and Fitness, Lifestyle, and Games. For Apple Arcade, there's even a dedicated folder.
Each folder displays the three apps in the category you use most often, and with a tap, you can open one of these. Mini app icons take up the fourth folder position, and if you tap that area, you can see a view of the whole list of apps in the group.
So for instance, if you have several games, you'll see the three games you play the most alongside a multi-app icon that you can tap to open the folder with any available game you instal. You can look at the applications and the category folders with Swipe gestures.

Suggestions and Recently Added Folders

At the top of the App Library, there's a "Suggestions" folder with four recommended apps shown based on factors like time of day, location, and activity.

ios14applibrarysuggestions

Another folder, "Recently Added," houses apps you recently added to your iPhone, as the name suggests. It also features App Clips so you can easily find them.

At the top of the App Library, there's a search screen where you can see an alphabetical list of all the applications you have installed. To start a search, scroll through, tap a letter on the side to go directly to that section, or type the name of the app in the search bar again.

Hide Home Screen Pages and Apps

In iOS 14, entire Home Screen pages can be hidden from view, which lets you keep a clean iPhone interface. Apps are viewable through the App Library when hidden this way.

ios14deletepages

Long press the Home Screen to make the app icons wiggle to cover Home Screen pages, and then tap on the dots at the bottom showing the various Home Screen pages you've set up. From there the pages you do not want to see can be unchecked.

If you want to conceal individual applications, you can drag them to the App Library from the Home Screen, removing their icons from the Home Screen view.
You can also move to a feature in the Settings app that prevents new app updates from appearing on the Home Screen, restricting them to the App Library.

Check out our iOS 14 design guide on the user interface elements that have been modified in iOS 14 for a closer look at something new with the Home Screen, widgets, and the App Library.

Compact Phone Calls

In iOS 14, incoming phone calls no longer take up the entire screen, and instead show up at the top of the monitor as a tiny banner. To ignore it, swipe up on the banner, or swipe down to see more choices for phones and answer the call. To accept or refuse a call, you can also tap right on the banner's accept and reject buttons.

ios14phonecalls

You'll always see the regular phone call screen when your iPhone is locked, but when it's opened, phone calls are a lot less annoying. This also refers to FaceTime calls and VoIP calls from third parties, as long as the compact call function support has been introduced by developers.

Picture in Picture

The Picture in Picture feature on the iPad expanded to the iPhone in iOS 14, and you can now watch videos or use FaceTime while doing something else.

ios14pictureinpicture

In a corner of the iPhone monitor, the windowed video or FaceTime call appears and can be moved to the most suitable location so that you can continue using your other applications. By pinching the video to render it larger or smaller, the Image in Image window can be resized.

Dragging the image in the image window off the screen minimises it while still allowing the audio to be heard.

Siri and Search Updates

In iOS 14, Siri was redesigned and enabling Siri either through physical buttons or through voice commands no longer causes the Siri app with the sound wave configuration to pop up and take over the entire show.

ios14compactsiri

Instead, there's a tiny animated Siri logo at the bottom of the iPhone's display when Siri is triggered. Many of the responses Siri gives are also displayed at the top of the iPhone in banners, so other activities are no longer disrupted by Siri.

Smarter Siri

A wider range of questions can be answered by Siri than before, so some complicated inquiries that may have previously led you to the web now receive direct answers.

In iOS 14, Siri can send an audio message on both the iPhone and CarPlay computers, and can share an Apple Maps ETA with a contact. In the iOS 14 update, Siri is now able to provide cycling directions for the latest cycling functionality.

For translation purposes, Apple has expanded the number of languages that Siri recognises, and you can now ask Siri to translate terms, phrases, and phrases into more than 65 language pairs. For English (Australia, India, Ireland, South Africa, and Great Britain), French, German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese, Siri has a more natural-sounding voice.

Search Improvements

To find what you're searching for, search is more compact than it was before, so you don't need to click through a lot of pages. The "Search in Apps" function has been refined by Apple, allowing you to enter a search term and conduct a search with a tap inside related apps such as Texts, Mail, and Data.

ios14search

Apple says that iOS 14 search was designed to be a single destination for applications, contacts, and files to be found and launched, fast information such as weather and maps to be accessed, and answers to common questions. To start a web search, search can also be used.
At the top of the search interface, the most appropriate search results for a given query are presented, and search suggestions begin to appear as you type, so that before you even finish a thought, you can get what you need.

If you type an app name, you can simply click Enter to open it instantly with a new feature that makes it easier to launch applications and websites from the search interface.

Third-Party Default Apps

In lieu of Mail and Safari, third-party mail and browser apps can be set as the default for the first time since iOS was introduced. That means it's simpler for Chrome users and others who prefer email apps such as Spark, Edison, and others to use their favourite apps.

Messages

In the Messages app on iOS 14, there are many useful features available, several of which make group chats easier. There are new tools for customising images, Memoji, and Animoji community chats, along with enhancements in accessibility and quality of life.

messagesfiltersios14

Now with the Messages app, you can opt to view all messages in a single feed, all messages from known senders, or all messages from unknown senders, making it easier to distinguish messages from people you don't know and messages sent by friends from automated services. To access the option, tap 'Filters' in the main conversation list of messages.

Pinned Chats

Important conversations can be pinned to the top of the Messages app by swiping to the right, which keeps them accessible. Up to nine conversations can be pinned in Messages.

messagespinnedconversations

Pinning a chat produces a tiny circle icon with the participant's picture at the top of the app, and the images show recent messages, tapbacks, and typing indicators. There's even a cool little function where you can see the typing indicators lined up with people's mouths using Memoji or with a person's pictures.

If there's an unread post, there's an icon, and for community chats, when a message is sent, you can see the icons of the three most recent participants circling around the pin.

Inline Replies

You can respond directly to a particular message in a conversation with inline responses, something that is particularly useful in a group conversation because it makes it easier to keep track of various chat threads.

ios14messagesinlinereplies

Mentions

There's also a new @mention function that allows you to direct a message in a group chat to a particular person to get their attention. If you've muted an active group chat, you'll get a reminder when someone sends a mention.

messagesmentionsios14

Typing Indicators

In iOS 14, you can see when someone is typing in the main messages list without needing to tap into the conversation.

Memoji

There are new hairstyles, headwear, and age options for Memoji, along with masks and new Memoji stickers for hug, fist bump, and blush.

ios14memoji

Apple says Memoji have also been improved with revamped facial and muscle structure that makes Memoji and Memoji stickers more expressive.

Maps

Maps still look mostly the same, but for those who have electric cars and those who want to cycle, they have some useful new features.

Of note, in 2020, the informative maps that Apple rolled out last year in the United States are heading to additional nations, including Canada. The newer maps contain more comprehensive highways, homes, parks, marinas, beaches, airports, and more and are available as of October in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

applemaps

Maps now give information on congestion zone tolls and alternative ways to avoid them in cities such as London and Paris with congestion zones to alleviate traffic.

Cycling Directions

The Apple Maps app on iOS 14 offers information on bike lanes, bike routes, and bike-friendly roads to guide cyclists. To avoid steep slopes or stairs, routes require height, how busy a street is and toggles.

ios14mapscycling

EV Routes

You can get directions that include charging stops along the path and ETAs that account for charging time if you have an electric vehicle.

Maps can monitor the current charge and type of charger when an electric vehicle is attached to an iPhone to provide the best route options for your unique vehicle.

Guides

Apple introduced "Collections" in iOS 13 to encourage individuals to aggregate lists of their favourite sites, and Collections were renamed Guides in iOS 14.

You can create your own Maps Guides, but Apple is also collaborating with trusted brands to provide curated guides designed to help people in different cities around the world find new ways to eat, shop, and explore.

ios14guides

Guides you like can be saved and automatically update when recommendation changes are made

Location Feedback

Apple Maps in iOS 14 features a native rating system along with the Guides feature that allows Maps users to check places of interest and upload relevant images, providing Apple with an in-house review system that does not rely on integrations from third parties.

Users who have visited a place physically can tap the marker for that location in the Maps app to offer a thumbs up or thumbs down ranking, and a new Add Photos to Maps option on location cards enables users to upload images directly to Apple Maps servers.

Speed Cameras

When creating a route, you can check Maps for speed cameras and red-light cameras. Maps also lets you know when you're approaching a speed camera or red-light camera.

Translate App

In iOS 13, Apple introduced Siri translation capabilities that allow Siri to translate phrases and words into multiple languages, and in iOS 14, that capability has been extended into an iPhone-only standalone Translate app.

Arabic, Mandarin, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish are all assisted by the Translate app.

ios14translateapp

The languages to be translated can be selected at the top of the app, and either voice or text entry is supported. For pronunciation purposes, translated material can be spoken aloud, and if you need to know the meaning of a translated word, there's a dictionary feature.
When using the Translate function, changing the iPhone to landscape mode enters a "Conversation Mode" in which the iPhone listens to the two languages and translates whatever is spoken. This helps you to use the iPhone as a translation tool to easily converse with someone in a foreign language.

translateconversationmodeios14

Also available is an Attention Mode that enlarges translated text for easier reading, which is helpful if you need to show someone a translated word. With privacy in mind, Translate was developed, and languages can be downloaded. Downloading a language allows all translations to be performed on the computer directly, without the need for an internet connection.

HomeKit

For those who have invested in Apple's smart home platform, HomeKit and the Home App on iOS devices have some useful new features.

A new smart feature, Suggested Automations, recommends helpful automations that you might want to build, while a new visual status bar at the top of the Home app offers an overview of accessories that need attention or have status changes to share.

ios14homekit

The Home app Control Center widget has been enhanced and it dynamically recommends accessories and scenes based on your user patterns that you may want to activate. Tapping the icon also opens up a complete list of favourite scenes and gadgets that can be managed without opening the Home app.

There's an Adaptive Lighting feature for smart lights, which is essentially Night Shift for your lights. With distinct colour temperatures, light bulbs that change colour can be changed during the day. During the day when working, cooler tones could be useful, while warmer tones with less blue light are ideal for the evening. For it to work, Adaptive Lighting requires HomeKit lighting manufacturers to implement it.
For security cameras and doorbells that operate with HomeKit Safe Video, Apple is introducing activity zones and face recognition. Activity zones will block places where you don't want to receive motion alerts, and your Images app pulls facial recognition so that it can tell you whether there's a friend or family member at the door.

New Safari Features

Safari is quicker than ever and on Android, Apple says it offers JavaScript performance 2x faster than Chrome. A built-in translation feature is now available that can be used to translate websites into English, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Russian, or Portuguese in Brazil.

ios14translatewebsite

A new password tracking function keeps an eye on passwords stored in the iCloud Keychain and lets you know if a known data breach has involved one of those passwords. If a breach is found by Safari, it will let you know and establish a new password.

Developers have a new API that provides an alternative to translate existing Apple sign-in web accounts, which provides an additional layer of security, and a new Website Privacy Report is available.
ios14trackingsafariwarnings
As part of Apple's ongoing Intelligent Monitoring Prevention efforts to give you more protection on the web, the Website Privacy Report shows you all of the cross-site trackers mounted on a given website, and which trackers Safari is blocking.

Health App

There are some new features in health related to the Sleep Monitoring functionality that is being implemented in watchOS 7. Without an Apple Watch, many of these capabilities can also work.

A new personalised sleep schedule allows you to pick targets for bedtime and wake-up, with Apple sending notifications when it's time to sleep.
ios14sleepschedule

Do Not Disturb is enabled by a Sleep Mode toggle, so you will not receive text messages or updates at night. It also dims the screen of the iPhone and shows the date and time, the alarm for the next day and the actions set up for Wind Down. You can access Sleep mode in the Control Center, but it also activates and deactivates depending on the sleep schedule you have set up.

A Wind Down purpose helps you create a tailored routine to get ready for bed. You may select various calming acts that prepare you for sleep, such as turning off the lights or launching a soothing noise-playing meditation app or app. Sleep mode is allowed by Wind Down. Sleep data created by the latest sleep tracking feature included in watchOS 7 is also aggregated by the Health app.
ios14sleepdata

The Health app supports new data types for health history, mobility, symptoms, and ECG, along with these sleep features, and there is a Health Checklist that helps you to handle health and safety features such as Fall Detection, Noise Alerts, Emergency SOS settings, specifics of heart rate notification, and more.
healthchecklist

Hearing health safeguards have now been improved, and once you have reached the World Health Organization's recommended secure weekly listening dosage, the iPhone can now send warnings and decrease your headphone volume to a safe level. A new Control Center feature can also be used to track the current audio level of connected headphones to ensure that you are listening at a secure level.

Find My

In iOS 14, Find My did not receive any interface updates, but Apple secretly released a new Find My Network Accessory Program that enables products and accessories from third parties to interact with the Find My app. This feature is designed to allow users use the Find My app to monitor missing items directly on their Apple devices.
FindMyTileFeature

Family Setup

Apple also introduced a new Family Setup feature with watchOS 7 and iOS 14 that allows children and older adults who do not have iPhones to use the Apple Watch through a family member who acts as a system manager. Family Configuration lets an Apple Watch be set up via the iPhone of a parent, enabling children to use an iPhone-free Apple Watch with parental supervision.

Kids can use the complete Apple Watch functionality, stay in contact with their parents through phone calls and texts, and benefit from features such as Emergency SOS, Charts, Apple Music, and access to Siri. Kids can download apps from the App Store, create Memoji on the wrist, and complete the objectives of the activity, replacing "active calories" with minutes of movement.

familysetupios14

In order to enhance the Outdoor Stroll, Outdoor Run, and Outdoor Cycle workouts for children, Apple has optimised the Fitness app on the Apple Watch, and children can be inspired with emoji alerts customised to their reading level. Kids will submit and receive invitations to Activity Sharing and invite friends to Activity Competitions.

Using Family Setup requires children or older adults to use a cellular plan to have an LTE-enabled Apple Watch and their own phone number, and each child gets their own Apple ID to use Calendar, schedule reminders, view photos from the iPhone of a guardian, and even make purchases through the new feature of the Apple Cash Family.

Apple Cash Family lets parents use Apple Pay to give kids cash to spend on their watch, with parents able to track transactions. Parents are able to see the locations of their children and get updates on that location to ensure that children are where they are supposed to be.

Family Configuration enables guardians to access and monitor health-related information on the iPhone in the Health app, so that a parent can be set as an emergency contact and medical problems can be added to the Medical ID and allergies can be added. This is also beneficial for older adults who need activated features such as fall detection.

There is a Schooltime mode that triggers Do Not Interrupt and restricts access to Apple Watch features to keep children on track to ensure children are not disturbed by the Apple Watch at inappropriate times. Screen Time's Downtime function also extends to the Apple Watch.

Family Configuration includes the use of both iOS 14 and WatchOS 7, along with compatible hardware. Apple Watch Series 4 or later or Apple Watch SE, along with iPhone 6s or later, are required.

Car Key

Car Key is a feature built on NFC that helps you to unlock your car by tapping on the door handle with an Apple Watch or an iPhone. The car key will lock the car, and when the iPhone is put on an NFC reader or wireless adapter inside the car, it can be used to start a vehicle.

Your digital key is stored in the Wallet app, and through the Messages app, there are neat features including an ability to share a digital key with a friend or family member. Depending on who happens to borrow your vehicle, main forms may be constrained in diverse ways.

carkey ios 14

For parents who want to keep an eye on their children, there can be restrictions on acceleration, top speed, traction control, and stereo volume, which Apple says is perfect.

Even if your iPhone runs out of battery, thanks to a reserve feature, Car Key continues to function. After your iPhone dies, you can access and start your vehicle for up to five hours.

Like CarPlay, since it allows a car to have NFC, Car Key needs to be introduced by car manufacturers, so this is not something that would automatically function. The BMW 5 Series was marketed by Apple as the first car to support the feature, but a number of BMW models manufactured after July 1, 2020 are coming.

CarPlay

CarPlay supports customizable wallpaper in iOS 14, so you can select a new look for the Home Screen and CarPlay Dashboard. Cars with portrait screens now also have the option of a status bar for broader app views and a more natural style on the bottom of the CarPlay display.

carplay

Additional app categories are enabled, so third-party parking, EV charging, and fast food ordering apps can be accessed by CarPlay users. Siri can send audio messages and share ETAs with friends and family via CarPlay.

AirPods Feature Additions

With iOS 14, thanks to some software-based updates Apple has added, the AirPods and AirPods Pro are better than ever. For a more seamless audio switching experience, AirPods and AirPods Pro will now automatically switch between the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch as you switch between which computer you're using.

AirPods paired with your iPhone also have a warning to let you know when the battery gets low, so you can charge them before you need them and Improved Battery Charging has also been introduced by Apple to improve the battery life of the AirPods.
airpodscharging

Optimized Charging of Batteries refrains from completely charging the AirPods until they are required. So for instance, if you charge your AirPods at night, they will charge up to 80 percent and sit there about an hour before waking up before charging to complete, which minimises the time spent at a full charge.

AirPods Pro Spatial Audio and Motion API

The AirPods Pro spatial audio application, which brings movie theater-like surround sound to your earbuds, is one of the neatest new features added by Apple to iOS 14.

By applying directional audio philtres and subtle frequency changes, spatial audio, which uses dynamic head tracking, can generate immersive sound anywhere in space. Spatial audio uses the AirPods Pro and iPhone gyroscope and accelerometer to track the motion of your head and the location of your iPhone, compare the motion data, and then reshape the sound field so that it stays anchored to your computer even as your head moves.

Game developer Firi Games has developed an App Clip for the space shooter Phoenix 2, which can be played by visiting the Phoenix 2 website and clicking on the 'Play' banner, for those who want to check out App Clips. Much like a native app, the demo of the game plays, but without having to download anything, and there is a link back to the full game. In a similar way, other App Clips will work.

app clip game

Apple has also developed a Motion API that enables users, useful for fitness apps and games, to access orientation, user acceleration, and rotational rates for AirPods Pro.

Intercom

An upcoming iOS 14.2 update introduces the Intercom feature with the HomePod 14.2 app that converts HomePod, HomePod mini, and other devices into intercoms that can be used in the household.
homepodminiintercom

By sending and receiving spoken messages via HomePod speakers or via iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and CarPlay, Intercom lets family members connect with each other at home. To trigger it the intercom can be triggered by saying "Hey Siri, Intercom" followed by a message. When people are away from home, an intercom may also be used.

To send a message to everyone in the household or send a reply to an Intercom message sent by someone else, you may select unique HomePods or devices at home. Intercom messages are displayed as alerts on devices like the iPhone and iPad, with the ability to listen to an audio message.

App Clips

App Clips, new to iOS 14, allow you to use a part of an app without having to download the whole app at the moment you need it.

For example, you would be able to use the Yelp App Clip to get it done without the hassle of downloading the Yelp app if you want to make a fast reservation at a restaurant with an app like Yelp. After scanning a QR code, NFC tag, or an Apple-designed App Clip code, an App Clip can be enabled in just a few seconds and it is instantly accessible. An App Clip is not a regular download, and it goes away when you're finished with an app clip.

appclips

Businesses can build NFC App Clip tags, QR codes, connections, map location cards, connection messages, and more. In a variety of ways, users can view App Clips. You can scan them (QR code), tap them (NFC), click a Safari connection, tap an App Clip on an iMessage, and more.

Recently used App Clips are stored in the App Library, but are not installed on your computer, and you can instal the full version of an app with a tap if you like, after you've used the App Clip. App Clips are safe and compliant with Apple Pay to make purchases or, if you need an account to use an App Clip experience, sign in with Apple.

Beginning later in 2020, Apple plans to add support for Apple-designed Software Clip codes.

Privacy Enhancements

With every version of iOS, Apple strengthens privacy security for its users, and iOS 14 is no exception, clarifying what information apps gather, requesting more user consent, and offering ways to use location features without providing precise location data.

App Store Privacy

For each product page for applications on the App Store, Apple is creating a new section that will include an easy-to-read overview of privacy policies before you download an app. Developers, including data obtained by the developer and used to monitor users, would be forced to self-report their privacy practises. For App Store applications, Apple has compared this feature to a "nutrition label".

Clipboard

IOS 14 includes a warning when an app or widget accesses text that has been copied to the clipboard, so you can know what applications are accessing the text saved on the clipboard.

Tracking Controls

Before tracking you with their apps, developers must obtain express user consent, so you can select the apps that have permission to track you. By switching off the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" option in the Privacy section of the Settings app, you can also opt out of allowing apps to request monitoring at all.
app tracking pop up ios 14

When iOS 14 was released, Apple originally intended to add the anti-tracking feature, but after pressure from ad providers and app developers, Apple decided to delay it. The monitoring decline alternative will not be added until "early next year."

"In announcing the delay, Apple made the following statement: "We believe that technology should protect the fundamental right of users to privacy, and that means providing users with tools to understand which apps and websites may share their data for advertisement or advertising measurement purposes with other companies, as well as the tools to revoke permission for this tracking. If allowed, a system would promptly share their data with other companies for advertising or advertising measurement purposes. We want to give developers the time they need to make the required improvements, and the requirement to use this monitoring permission will come into force early next year as a result.

Approximate Location

You may now choose to share an estimated position rather than your exact location for apps that need your location to operate, such as those that include the weather. Which makes it possible for you to get the details you need but it prevents the app from knowing exactly where you are.

Network Access

In order to locate and connect to local devices on your network, applications must have user permission. Some applications, such as those that monitor smart home items, need to connect to local devices, while others, including Facebook, do not.

ios14localnetworkpermission

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

There's a "Use Private Address" option when connected to a Wi-Fi network to prevent network operators from monitoring your iPhone. When you pick the Wi-Fi network to which you are linked, you can find the setting in the Settings app under Wi-Fi. When connecting to a Wi-Fi network that doesn't use the Private Address option, Apple also provides an alert.

wifiwarning

Bluetooth devices can be renamed in iOS 14.

Photos Access

There's no longer a need to allow the client to view all of your images when an app demands access to the Photo Library. With iOS 14, you can opt to block access, allow blanket access, or choose individual images that the app can view.

Recording Indicator

In iOS 14, a tiny light is visible at the top of the monitor next to the cellular signal bar when an app uses either the microphone or the camera for recording purposes.

ios14privacydotrecording

Whether an app is in active use or is being used in the background, the light is triggered, so you can guarantee that apps are not captured secretly without your knowledge.

You can now also see in the Control Center which applications have recently been used by the camera or the iPhone microphone.

Contacts Autofill

Apple also allows you to type individual names into an app to automatically fill in their corresponding phone numbers, emails, and other information, instead of supplying third-party applications with access to your contacts. Autofill exits the Contacts app and is rendered on-device, and without permission, contacts are not exchanged with third-party developers.

Sign in with Apple

Apple is moving to implement Sign in with Apple for more sites and services, and developers already have access to an API that allows clients to update their current accounts to Sign in with Apple for better protection of privacy.

Widgets

In iOS 14, location privacy services extend to widgets, and you can choose to allow widgets to access or disallow your location. Widgets can access location data for 15 minutes at a time while they are used and obey the guidelines for app access set in the Privacy section of Location Services in the Settings app.

Apple One Bundle and Fitness+

In September, Apple launched a new package of Apple One services offering many of Apple's services, such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and more for a monthly price that saves money for multi-service subscribers.

  • Multi-day rain forecast - The multi-day weather forecast includes the chance of precipitation for each day.

App Store and Apple Arcade

In the App Store, it is easier to see important information such as user reviews, age rating, category, and controller support, and apps that have subscriptions now work with Family Sharing, as long as the functionality has been allowed by the developer.

Now Apple Arcade has direct integration of the Game Center, so you can see which games are popular with friends of the Game Center and win achievements. Inside Apple Arcade apps, Game Center dashboards highlight game progress, awards, leaderboards, and more.

There's also a system-wide continuous play feature that allows you to start a game on one device and pick it up on another quickly. Other features of Apple Arcade include an ability to sort through games with philtres to find your favourites and an option to see upcoming Apple Arcade titles in the near future.

Other Feature Improvements

When you bring up the keyboard and tap the emoji button, there's now a search interface that lets you find emojis using keywords, much like on the Mac.

Dictation

On-device dictation is available for purposes of privacy protection, with all recording and processing performed offline. As you use your laptop, keyboard dictation often improves over time.

Expanded Game Controller Support

The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Adaptive Controller support iOS and iPadOS 14, adding them to the current supported controllers. Support for zone-based rumble haptics and motion sensors is also added by Apple, as well as OS-level controller button remapping.

In iOS 14, developers can also add keyboard, trackpad, and mouse support into games.

Augmented Reality

Specific geographic coordinates may be correlated with AR interactions, enabling them to be located at landmarks around the world. Video textures may also be applied to any part of a scene or virtual entity, making it more lifelike for objects, surfaces, and characters.

Apple says that on all devices with an A12 Bionic chip or later, iOS 14 brings improved support for face tracking.

Hand and Body Pose Detection

In its vision platform, Apple built a new API that enables developers to build apps capable of observing people's poses, movements, and gestures that could be used for fitness apps or safety training apps.

apple vision framework human body pose detection jumping jack

For touchless interaction in apps, hand recognition capabilities can be used. Apple showed a person holding a thumb and forefinger together in a demonstration that helped them to draw right on the display of the iPhone without touching it.

An emoji symbol was put in another demo over the hand gesture that was being developed (a peace sign). When it detected a particular hand gesture, a camera app was also able to automatically activate a photo capture.
This functionality can be used in apps in a large number of ways, and it will be fascinating to see how developers take advantage of it for content on iOS 14.

Revamped Field Test Mode

iOS 14 includes a revamped Field Test Mode that offers a better layout to make it easier to find details on cellular signal strength.

Accessibility

A variety of enhancements to functionality are included in iOS 14, mainly for VoiceOver. In order to incorporate VoiceOver support for applications and web interfaces that do not have support built in a VoiceOver Recognition function recognises key elements on the screen.

In apps and on the web, VoiceOver can read full sentence explanations of images and photos, and the text that it recognises can be spoken inside images. It also senses device controls automatically to make apps easier to navigate.

Headphones Accommodations, a new feature for accessibility, amplifies soft sounds and changes those listening levels as required to make music, movies, phone calls, and podcasts sound louder and clearer. The Transparency Mode on AirPods Pro also works with these headphone accommodations, rendering silent voices more audible while also turning out ambient sounds.

Sound recognition helps the iPhone to constantly listen to such noises, such as a baby crying, a fire alarm, a doorbell, a knock on the door, a cat meowing, and more as a helpful accessibility option for those who are hard of hearing.

ios14soundrecognition

It sends a warning when the iPhone senses one of the flagged sounds. Using the Control Center, it can be toggled on or off after the function is set up.

A "Back Tap" feature that allows you to double or triple tap on the back of an iPhone to perform an action such as pulling up Siri, accessing the Control Center, taking a screenshot, changing the volume, and more is also new to iOS 14.
backtapios14

For those who have a restricted range of motion and need assistance with shortcuts for smartphone usage, Back Tap is an accessibility feature, but it can be used by anyone who wants a simple tap-activated iPhone function shortcut. IPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max are compatible with Back Tap.

The Magnifier app was overhauled by Apple on iOS 14, adding an improved, more customizable interface and an option to take several shots for analysis at once. As detailed in our Magnifier guide, the modified app can now also be connected to the Home screen using the App Library.
