What's Next for the iPad mini

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at Apple, claims Apple is working on a new iPad mini that can measure 8.5 to 9 inches. It is not clear whether Apple plans to launch a larger iPad mini or whether a bezel reduction will support the increase in size.

It is expected that the next-generation iPad mini will continue to feature a Lightning port.

Apple is working on a new iPad mini with a mini-LED display, which could be the same iPad mini that is growing in size, Kuo has also said. Mini-LED technology can allow thinner and lighter product designs while also providing good performance in the wide colour gamut, high contrast and HDR, and local dimming, which dims the backlight behind the screen's black areas while keeping bright sections lit.

Apple will announce the latest 8.x-inch iPad mini in the first half of 2021, according to DigiTimes. In the first half of 2021, Kuo also assumes that the 8.5-inch iPad mini will arrive at some point.

iPad mini 5

Apple updated the iPad mini in March 2019, launching the fifth-generation version four years after the iPad mini 4 was launched. It was not clear prior to the update if Apple was going to keep the 7.9-inch tablet around, but it now has a strong place in the iPad lineup of the business.

With the exception of the screen size, the $399 iPad mini 5 is almost identical to the 10.5-inch iPad Air that was released alongside it. With a 2048 x 1536 7.9-inch Retina touchscreen, the iPad mini is Apple's smallest tablet.

The latest version has new display technology including True Tone for changing the white balance to fit the room's ambient lighting and large colour support for more vibrant, true-to-life colours compared to the previous iPad mini. The monitor is 25 percent brighter than the iPad mini 4 display.

Compared to the previous iPad mini, there are no hardware modifications. At the top and bottom of the iPad mini 5, there are thick bezels, along with slimmer side bezels. It is 6.1mm thick, thinner than the iPad, and thicker than the iPad Pro, similar to the iPad Air.

The iPad mini comes in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold, and continues to have a biometric authentication Touch ID Home button and a headphone jack. Unlike the latest iPad Pro models that use USB-C, it still continues to charge through Lightning.

The iPad mini 5 is fitted with an A12 Bionic chip inside, which is the latest generation A-series chip from Apple used in the iPhone. It's 3x faster compared to the previous-generation iPad mini, with 9x faster graphics. It provides the same all-day battery life as other iPads, depending on the mission, lasting up to 10 hours.

Apple Pencil support is a recent addition to the iPad mini, and the tablet is compatible with Apple's first generation Apple Pencil. It has no Smart Connector and a matching Smart Keyboard, unlike the iPad Air.

The iPad mini 5 uses an 8-megapixel f/2.4 camera with no rear flash and 1080p video recording that's similar to the camera used in the previous model. While the rear camera is largely the same and lacking in comparison to Pro models, the front-facing 7-megapixel camera is an enhancement.

The iPad mini features two stereo sound speakers, dual microphones, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 802.11ac, Gigabit level LTE on cellular models, and eSIM technology, much like the iPad Air.

For the 64GB WiFi-only edition, prices on the latest iPad mini start at $399, with the 256GB model priced at $549. For $130 more than the base price of each configuration, cellular versions are available. $99 is eligible for the first-generation Apple Pencil that fits with the iPad mini.

Reviews

IPad mini 5 reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with critics calling the new computer a capable but compact tablet with almost all of the new iPad Air's features.

Reviewers were not impressed with the design, but were pleased with the inclusion of Apple Pencil support and the super quick A12 chip inside, which hasn't changed much in 7 years. Simply put, no other tablet of this size is as strong as the mini iPad.

Design

In a smaller, more compact box, the fifth generation iPad mini can be compared to the iPad Air. The iPad mini is the smallest, most portable iPad from Apple, but it is an iPad Air inside.

The iPad mini 5 is similar to the iPad mini 4 in terms of design, featuring a tapered frame, rounded corners, thick bezels at the top and bottom of the unit, and thinner side bezels.

ipadmini4trio

The front-facing camera and the Touch ID Home button house those thicker top and bottom bezels. There is a single-lens rear camera without a flash at the back of the iPad mini, and at the bottom there is a lighting port with two speakers for charging purposes.

ipadminicolors

In addition to a sleep/wake button, the iPad mini 5 continues to have a headphone jack at the top, and volume up/down buttons are on the edge.

ipadminithin

The iPad mini is 203.2 mm tall (8 inches), 5.3 inches (134.8 mm) wide and 6.1 mm thick (0.24 inches). It's a little thicker than the iPad Pro, and the thickness of the iPad Air is the same. For the WiFi model, it weighs in at 0.66 pounds and for the cellular model, 0.68 pounds.

ipadminidimensions

Apple is selling Silver, Space Gray, and Gold for the fifth-generation iPad mini.

Touch ID

For biometric authentication reasons, the iPad mini 5 continues to feature a Touch ID Home button. Touch ID is used for iPad unlocking, accessing applications, authenticating purchases from iTunes, and verifying purchases made with Apple Pay.

Headphone Jack

Both feature headphone jacks on the iPad mini, iPad Air, and the 9.7-inch iPad. There are no headphone jacks on the 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models released in 2018, nor are the latest iPhones from Apple.

Display

With a 2048 x 1536 resolution at 326 pixels per inch, the iPad mini features a completely laminated 7.9-inch multi-touch display, the maximum pixel density of all of Apple's iPads.

At 500 nits, brightness comes in, rendering the iPad mini 5 25% brighter than the iPad mini 4. To safeguard the monitor from fingerprints, there is an antireflective coating for 1.8 percent reflectivity and an oleophobic coating.

The broad colour gamut of the P3 provides rich, vivid colours that are true to life, while True Tone changes the display's white balance to match the room's ambient lighting. When in dimly lit rooms, outdoors, and more, this helps to make the display easier on the eyes by cutting down on the blue tint when necessary.

Apple Pencil Support

The iPad mini of the fifth generation is compatible with the Apple Pencil of the first generation, a variant with a Lightning connector at the top.

The Apple Pencil is an Apple-made stylus designed to provide unprecedented accuracy and iPad integration while providing a feeling close to the feel of a pencil on paper.

For pressure-sensitive drawing and writing, there are pressure and positioning sensors built into the Apple Pencil that allow it to detect a range of motion and force. The orientation and angle of the hand holding it are calculated by two tilt sensors at the tip of the Apple Pencil, so that the tip's edge can be used for shading.

The Apple Pencil has a battery life of 12 hours and charges using the built-in connector at the end, which is designed to plug into the iPad's Lightning port. A charge of 15 seconds delivers half an hour of fuel.

There is an Apple Pencil second-generation, but that model is for the 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro versions only.

In 2015, alongside the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, Apple released the original Apple Pencil, and while it was exclusive to Apple's most costly tablets when it was launched, the entire iPad range now works with the Apple Pencil.

A12 Bionic Chip

In the 2018 iPhone range, the iPad mini 5 is fitted with the same A12 Bionic chip used by Apple. The A12 chip in the iPad mini is clocked at 2.4GHz based on early benchmarks, the same as the A12 chip in the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max.

ipadminivideoediting

Compared to the iPad mini 4, Apple says the iPad mini 5 features three times faster performance, along with nine times faster graphics.

Neural Engine

An 8-core Neural Engine features the A12 Bionic chip that utilises real-time machine learning to power iOS features for enhanced photo taking capabilities, gaming, virtual reality, and more.

For AR, the A12 Bionic features faster rear camera detection of AR surfaces and immersive 3D gaming experiences.

RAM

The iPad mini 5 features 3GB RAM.

Cameras

There is an 8-megapixel f/2.4 aperture rear camera, the same camera that is available on the 9.7-inch iPad and the iPad Air.

Live Images, auto HDR, 43-megapixel panoramas, Burst Mode, and Timer Mode are supported by the camera, but no rear flash feature exists. As for video, at 30 frames per second and 720p Slo-mo video at 120 frames per second, the camera can record 1080p HD video.

ipadminicamera

The front-facing FaceTime camera is almost as strong as the 7-megapixel lens and f/2.2 aperture rear camera. Wide colour capture and a Retina flash feature are supported by the front-facing camera, but there is no True Depth camera system and no Face ID, Animoji, Memoji, or Portrait Mode.

Trackpad and Mouse Support

IPadOS 13.4 supports all iPad Pro models with the trackpad and mouse, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad fifth generation and later, and iPad mini 4 and later.

Trackpad support has been "completely reimagined for the iPad" and its touch-first gui, according to Apple, while Mac users should still be familiar with it. The cursor appears as a circle on the home screen or dock that highlights different elements of the user interface, text fields, and apps, making it clear what can be clicked on.

trackpad2

Trackpad gestures are intended to allow users to switch between apps, access the app switcher, and enable the Dock, Control Center, and Slide Over apps. On the trackpad, multi-touch gestures make for fast and simple iPadOS navigation.

To integrate into both first and third-party applications, Apple has designed trackpad support. For example, it supports scrolling through web pages in Safari and photo libraries in Photos, such as editing text accurately in notes and other apps, viewing and organizing e-mail in Mail, and more.

magicmouse2 1

Apple claims that most applications from third parties will function without any modifications, and developers will be able to take advantage of new APIs for deeper support for the trackpad.

Compatible Mice and Trackpads

Trackpad and mouse support would allow any of the above-mentioned iPads running iPadOS 13.4 to be connected via Bluetooth or USB to a Magic Mouse, Magic Mouse 2, Magic Trackpad, Magic Trackpad 2, or third party mouse.

IPads allow gestures that include scrolling, swiping between app spaces, accessing the Home screen, accessing the App Switcher, zooming in and out, tapping, right-clicking, and swiping between pages while attached to the Magic Trackpad 2.

When connected to a Magic Mouse 2, iPads will support scrolling, right clicking, and swiping between pages.

Apple has created an adapter for the Magic Keyboard, which is an iPad Smart Keyboard with a trackpad, but this is limited to the iPad Pro models for 2018 and 2020.

Battery Life

The iPad mini has a "all-day" battery life, so with its 19.32Wh battery, it lasts up to 10 hours. Both iPad models from Apple deliver the same all-day battery life of 10 hours.

At the bottom of the tablet, the iPad Air charges through a Lightning port that operates with a Lightning to USB cable and includes a USB Power Adapter.

Other Features

Storage Space

The iPad Mini is available with either 64GB of storage ($399) or 256GB of storage ($549).

Speakers and Microphones

There are two speakers for stereo sound at the bottom of the iPad mini and dual microphones for FaceTime calls.

Connectivity

802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and Gigabit LTE are supported by the iPad mini. It supports 28 LTE bands, including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 29, 30, 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 46, 66, and 71 bands.

The iPad mini has two SIM options: a physical nano-SIM slot on the side of the device and an eSIM or digital SIM, which is designed to operate without a physical SIM card being needed.

The Apple SIM supports the physical nano-SIM slot, which is designed to allow users to switch without hassle between carriers. The Apple SIM is sponsored by many carriers in the U.S. and other nations, but a physical SIM card is still needed for those who don't, including Verizon.

With eSIM, while flying, consumers can sign up for international data plans.

How to Buy

The iPad mini is available for purchase from the Apple Website and Apple retail stores online. The 64GB iPad mini is available for $399, while it costs $549 for the 256GB model.

The 64GB capacity WiFi and Cellular model is priced at $529 and $679 is available for the 256GB WiFi and Cellular.

As of January 2020, from its refurbished store, Apple is selling discounted iPad mini 5 models. Based on available stock, the availability of various capacities and colours varies.
