Apple's 2020 Eighth-Generation iPad
The eighth-generation iPad by Apple, launched in September 2020, is an iterative update to the low-cost iPad of the seventh generation, but with an updated Neural Engine A12 Bionic processor. There are no other new features which are new to the most affordable iPad from Apple.
In 2018, the A12 processor was first released in the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, and although it is slower than the A14 chip in the iPad Air, it is much quicker than the A10X chip in the low-cost iPad of the previous generation. The A12 Bionic chip provides 40 percent better CPU performance, according to Apple, and twice the graphics capability, making the iPad up to twice as powerful as the top-selling Windows laptop and three times faster than the top-selling Android tablet.
In addition to improved photo editing, new Siri capabilities, and more the Neural Engine offers next-level machine learning capabilities, adding people occlusion and motion detection in AR apps (features only available on other Apple devices).
For educational institutions and others on a budget, the eighth-generation iPad continues to be positioned as an affordable entry-level tablet, with prices starting at $329 or $299 for EDU clients of Apple.
The eighth-generation iPad continues to offer a 10.2-inch display, like the seventh-generation iPad, which provides more viewing space than the 9.7-inch iPad that was sold a few years ago. After the 9.7-inch iPad mini, Apple's smallest iPad is the 10.2-inch iPad. The 10.2-inch display has a 264 pixels per inch resolution of 2160 x 1620 and offers almost 3.5 million pixels along with a brightness of 500 nits.
Like previous models with an aluminum body that is thicker and smaller than the iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the eighth generation iPad looks the same. It is the only iPad that continues to feature thick bezels and a Touch ID Home button alongside the iPad mini.
Support for the Apple Pencil continues to be included, and there is a Smart Connector, so the iPad works with the 10.2-inch iPad Smart Keyboard.

An 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, Gigabit-class LTE (for cellular models), a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime camera, 10 hours of battery life, Touch ID, support for Apple Pay, and 802.11ac WiFi are other iPad features.
The iPad starts at $329 for 32GB of storage, comes in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold, and is available for purchase from the Apple online store and Apple retail stores. Like the Smart Keyboard, priced at $159, the Apple Pencil is available separately for $99.
Reviews
The A12 Bionic brings some welcome speed and performance changes, but the refresh is otherwise unremarkable, reviewers of the 2020 10.2-inch iPad said.
Performance with the A12 chip was described as "noticeably smoother" than performance with the previous-generation model, thanks to the improved GPU, particularly when it comes to gaming. The 2020 iPad is the same as the 2019 iPad, apart from the speed upgrades, but critics didn't have anything else to say.
Design
Featuring the same 10.2-inch panel, which is surrounded by slim size bezels and thicker top/bottom bezels, the 2020 iPad is similar to the previous generation 2019 iPad.
The iPad's bezels are thicker than the iPad Air and iPad Pro bezels, two more costly iPad alternatives for Apple. It has an aluminium case available in silver, gold, or space grey.
At the top of the tablet, along with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor at the bottom, is a front-facing FaceTime HD camera. There's a rear-facing camera on the back, and there are speakers and a Lightning charging port on the bottom.
The 2020 iPad measures 9.8 inches in length, 6.8 inches in width, and 7.5 mm in thickness, weighing in at 1.07 pounds, with no dimensional adjustments.
The iPad features only two speakers instead of a four-speaker audio setup, unlike the iPad Pro models, and there is a Smart Connector on the side that allows it to work with accessories such as the Smart Keyboard.

Display
The 2020 iPad from Apple features a 10.2-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2160 by 1620 with a brightness of 500 nits at 264 pixels per inch.
The monitor is fitted with a touch sensor that allows the Apple Pencil to work with it.

While the display works much like the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini with the Apple Pencil, it lacks many features found on the more expensive tablets from Apple.
The laminated construction, antireflective coating, broad colour support, Promotion technology, or True Tone capabilities are not included.
Apple Pencil
Compatible with the original Apple Pencil is the eighth-generation iPad. From the low-cost iPad to the iPad Pro, Apple's entire iPad lineup supports the Apple Pencil.
The Apple Pencil is a stylus built to provide unprecedented accuracy and iPad integration while also providing a natural feel that is close to the feeling of using a pen or pencil on paper.
For pressure-sensitive drawing and writing, pressure and positioning sensors are built into the Apple Pencil to enable it to detect a variety of forces. The orientation and angle of the hand holding it are calculated by two tilt sensors at the tip of the Apple Pencil, allowing for shading techniques.
The Apple Pencil has a 12-hour battery life and at the bottom of the unit it charges through the built-in Lightning connector. A 15-second charge delivers half an hour of electricity, so when required, it will still have energy. No updates to the original Apple Pencil have been made, and it is still priced at $99.
A12 Bionic Processor
An improved A12 Bionic processor, an improvement to the A10 Fusion processor used in the seventh generation iPad, is featured on the eighth-generation iPad.
The A12 is a somewhat older technology, launched in the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR for the first time, but it is still fast and provides better performance compared to the previous iPad.
The A12 Bionic, with four high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, is a 64-bit six-core CPU. A Neural Network for advanced machine learning and virtual reality capabilities is also part of the chip.
The eighth-generation iPad with the A12 Bionic chip is 40 percent better when it comes to CPU output with twice the graphics capability, according to Apple.
Apple says the new iPad is up to two times faster than Windows' top-selling laptop, three times faster than Android's top-selling tablet, and up to six times faster than Chromebook's top-selling.
RAM
Apple does not reveal the amount of RAM in its devices, however like the seventh generation model, the eighth-generation iPad contains 3 GB of RAM.
Battery Life
The eighth-generation iPad has a battery life of 10 hours, which Apple claims is a "all-day" battery. That's the same battery life that Apple has been striving for in the last few iPad iterations, and it hasn't changed the iPad battery capacity.
When using an LTE link, cellular models last for up to nine hours. Charging the iPad is done at the bottom of the unit via the Lightning port.
Cameras
The iPad is fitted with an 8-megapixel f/2.4 aperture rear camera, the same camera that was available on the fifth-generation iPad.
Live Images, auto HDR, 43-megapixel panoramas, Burst mode and Timer mode are enabled, but they are not as advanced as the iPad Pro camera. Even, there is no rear flash.
The iPad camera is capable of recording 30 frames per second of 1080p HD video and 120 frames per second of 720p Slo-mo video. It lacks 4K video capture, enhanced video stabilization, and continuous autofocus, compared to the iPad Pro.
As for the FaceTime front-facing camera, it is 1.2 megapixels and supports HD video recording at 720p.
Trackpad and Mouse Support
For all iPad Pro versions, iPad Air 2 and later, the fifth-generation iPad and later, and the iPad mini 4 and later, iPadOS 13.4 brought trackpad and mouse support.
Trackpad support has been "completely reimagined for the iPad" and its touch-first gui, according to Apple, while Mac users should still be familiar with it. The cursor appears as a circle on the home screen or dock that highlights different elements of the user interface, text fields, and apps, making it clear what can be clicked on.
Trackpad gestures are intended to allow users to switch between apps, access the app switcher, and enable the Dock, Control Center, and Slide Over apps. On the trackpad, multi-touch gestures make for fast and simple iPadOS navigation.
To integrate into both first and third-party applications, Apple has designed trackpad support. For example, it supports scrolling through web pages in Safari and photo libraries in Photos, such as editing text accurately in notes and other apps, viewing and organizing e-mail in Mail, and more.
Most third-party apps work with a mouse or trackpad with no changes at all, and developers can take advantage of new APIs for deeper trackpad support.
Compatible Mice and Trackpads
Trackpad and mouse support enables any of the above-mentioned iPads running iPadOS 13.4 to attach via Bluetooth or USB to a Magic Mouse, Magic Mouse 2, Magic Trackpad, Magic Trackpad 2, or third-party mouse.
iPad allow gestures that include scrolling, swiping between app spaces, accessing the Home screen, accessing the App Switcher, zooming in and out, tapping, right-clicking, and swiping between pages while attached to the Magic Trackpad 2.
I Pads support scrolling, right clicking, and swiping between pages when attached to a Magic Mouse 2.
Apple has developed an accessory for the Magic Keyboard, which is an iPad Smart Keyboard with a trackpad, but this is limited to the iPad Pro models for 2018 and 2020.
