iPhone 12 Supports 5GHz Wi-Fi Over Personal Hotspot

The newest iPhone 12 models from Apple support Personal Hotspot connectivity over 5GHz to guest devices, offering faster upload speeds. Personal Hotspots were enabled by previous iPhone models, but only with Wi-Fi transmission speeds of 2.4GHz.

Personal Hotspot capability on iPhones enables users to use the cellular data of their smartphone and share it over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or a wired link with other devices. All iPhones have traditionally built Personal Hotspot connections over 2.4GHz networks, which are powered by the widest variety of devices out there.

Faster 5GHz Wi-Fi Via iPhone 12 Personal Hotspot

All new iPhone 12 models support 5GHz transfer by default when Personal Hotspot is enabled. However a new toggle labelled ‘Maximize Compatibility’ allows tethering using the slower 2.4GHz Wi-Fi throughput. Apple states that this would reduce the efficiency of the internet for devices connected to the hotspot of your iPhone, at the cost of full connectivity. Chances are you can safely keep this toggled disabled if you are using a recent Apple computer.

You can press the option key on your Mac and click the Wi-Fi icon to see the connection speed when you connect to your iPhone 12 via Personal Hotspot. Similar to the screenshot below, it should display 5GHz.

A 5GHz Wi-Fi network will potentially allow transmission rates of up to 1300 Mbps. You might not see benefits from using the 5GHz Personal Hotspot on your tethered devices unless you are in a region with reliable 5G network upload speeds. You may find it easier to connect your Mac through the USB-C to Lightning cable that now ships with every iPhone 12, considering that 5G eats through the battery on iPhone 12.Without any interruption, it will not only have consistent transfer rates, it will continue charging your iPhone 12 as long as it is connected to the Mac.
