Rumored 2021 iPhone Lineup

We're nowhere near the launch of the 2021 iPhone lineup, which is supposed to arrive in the fall of 2021, but we've heard leaks about the devices arriving in 2021 when we were already hearing speculation about the versions of the iPhone 12.

The 2021 iPhone lineup will look identical to the 2020 iPhone lineup, with four devices in 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch sizes, with two of the iPhones being "Pro" higher-end versions and two positioned as more affordable, lower-cost devices.

Significant design changes are not planned and iPhones in 2021 will have the same feature set as iPhones in 2020, but we can possibly rely on improvements to the camera, a faster A-series processor, and Qualcomm's new 5G chip.

While we're not counting on a major design overhaul, there might be some tweaks. Rumors suggest at least one iPhone in 2021 could feature a portless design that relies entirely on wireless charging rather than a Lightning port, though it's not clear if this will pan out. In 2021, Apple could also shrink the notch, with one rumour saying the iPhone lineup would be added to a shallower notch with a reduced height rather than reduced width.

When it comes to improved camera technology, reports have indicated that along with a four-camera system, we could see improved stabilisation and high-end 40 to 64-megapixel camera lenses. As for display technology, 2021 may be the year that Apple eventually adopts 120Hz ProMotion displays for the iPhone lineup, made possible by a change to low-power LTPO OLED technology.

Prospective Name

Since the iPhone 8 debuted in 2017 alongside the iPhone X, the naming strategy of Apple has been somewhat confused because we have never seen an iPhone 9. We switched to the XS, XS Max, and XR after the iPhone X, and then to the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max.

Below are the names that Apple has used since the iPhone first launched in 2007.

  • 2007 - iPhone

  • 2008 - iPhone 3G

  • 2009 - iPhone 3GS

  • 2010 - iPhone 4 (new design)

  • 2011 - iPhone 4s

  • 2012 - iPhone 5 (new design)

  • 2013 - iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c

  • 2014 - iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (new design)

  • 2015 - iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

  • 2016 - iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

  • 2017 - iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X (new design)

  • 2018 - iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max

  • 2019 - iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max

  • 2020 (Rumored) - iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max

According to reports, Apple's iPhone 12 lineup includes the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the 2021 iPhone lineup could be iPhone 12s or iPhone 13 based on previous naming conventions, and we should hear more about the launch of the new smartphones.

Design

In 2021, with no changes in sizes, Apple is expected to continue selling four iPhones. So we should expect an iPhone mini of 5.4 inches, a low-cost iPhone of 6.1 inches, a Pro model of 6.1 inches and a Pro Max model of 6.7 inches.

No Ports?

An iPhone with no external ports or buttons for a clean, sleek interface has been Apple's long-standing target. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in 2019 that with the removal of the Lightning port, Apple will release a high-end iPhone in 2021 that offers a "completely wireless experience"

Such an iPhone would possibly only charge using Qi-based wireless charging, but that would require some big changes in the speed of wireless charging. The possibility that Apple might maybe introduce a Smart Connector for the 2021 iPhone, which would allow charging, data transmission and synchronization without a Lightning port, has also been suggested by one rumour.

Smart Connectors have been limited to the iPad models at present and have been limited to powering accessories such as the Smart Keyboard.

In June, Japanese website Mac Otakara posted a mockup of a 2021 iPhone with a USB-C port and a notch-free design, but it is not clear if it is an accurate representation of what we might expect, nor do we know whether Apple aims to slim down or remove the notch on 2021 devices. A USB-C port is not compatible with reports that there are no ports at all.

Shallower Notch

One leaker thinks that in the 2021 iPhone lineup, Apple will add a smaller notch. The notch could have a reduced height instead of being shorter in width, to make it less visible and better able to blend in to the top of the iPhone.

Touch ID?

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that for launch in 2021, Apple is working on an iPhone with both Face ID and an on-display fingerprint sensor, indicating that one of the 2021 iPhones may have both Face ID and Touch ID.

Bloomberg has also said that both Face ID and an under-display fingerprint sensor will be included in a potential iPhone, with the technology maybe ready in 2021.

120Hz ProMotion Display

Ahead of the launch of the iPhone 12 lineup, there were some reports suggesting that the high-end iPhone 12 models could feature 120Hz ProMotion displays, but it became apparent later in the rumour cycle that this feature was postponed until 2021 due to battery life concerns.

Apple needs to follow the LTPO display technology to introduce a 120Hz refresh rate on the iPhone. OLED displays with low-power LTPO backplane technology will be used for at least two 2021 iPhone models, paving the way for 120Hz refresh speeds. A more power-efficient backplane is provided by LTPO, which turns on and off the individual pixels on the monitor and allows for better battery life.

The Pro models, who are the ones speculated to embrace ProMotion technology, may be the two models with LTPO.

A15 Processor

Apple will use a 5nm+ A15 chip for the 2021 iPhones, with the chip set to be manufactured by TrendForce.

5G Chip

Qualcomm launched a new third-generation 5G Snapdragon X60 modem in February 2020, which will be used on iPhones in 2021. The X65 and X70 Qualcomm modem chips will also be used for future iPhones.

Rumors say that some 2021 iPhones, running on mmWave or sub-6GHz networks, will have single 5G band support, but not both, allowing Apple to save money in countries where mmWave 5G networks are inaccessible.

Apple allegedly will begin to decrease iPhone prices in 2021 to better handle the expense of 5 G chip technology, introducing a soft battery board design that will reduce costs by 30 to 40 percent relative to the price of the iPhone 12 board.

Camera Improvements

The entire 2021 iPhone lineup will use the same camera sensors as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, adding upgrades to the lower-end models, a rumour from display analyst Ross Young has suggested.

In 2021, sensor-shift stabilization throughout the iPhone lineup will also be extended, adding improvements in low light output and stabilization by reducing camera shake.

There will be some significant improvements to camera technology in the 2021 iPhone lineup, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Upgraded 6-element Ultra Wide lenses with f/1.8 apertures and autofocus capabilities are expected to appear in the Pro models.

Release Date

In the fall of 2021, Apple's 2021 iPhone lineup will be unveiled, with the company presumably looking to return to its usual launch schedule in September. Due to development delays caused by the global health crisis, Apple's iPhone 12 lineup didn't launch in September as planned.

Beyond 2021

2022 iPhone Camera Improvements

The 2021 Pro models are supposed to get upgrades to the Ultra Wide camera, and all 2022 iPhone models will get the same update, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Future iPhones, such as those arriving in 2022, are supposed to have a periscope lens for even better optical zoom, but the 2021 devices are not rumoured to have that feature. It's not clear which iPhones will feature the latest periscope lens in 2022, but the technology is rumoured to be seriously pursued by Apple.

As much of the technology is covered by other patents, Apple has reportedly run into difficulty designing its own periscope camera device, and is now considering buying the components from the patent holders. For example, Samsung owns the "ball-type actuator" technology used in many lenses for periscopes. A periscope lens could allow for up to 10x optical zoom.

Foldable iPhone

Furthermore, Apple could potentially launch some kind of foldable iPhone in the future, based on numerous reports and patents published by the company, as well as competition from companies that have built foldable smartphones, such as Microsoft and Samsung.

According to reports from the Chinese supply chain, Apple reportedly began sending foldable iPhones to Foxconn for testing purposes in November 2020. The test requires the measurement of the use of OLEDs or micro-LEDs and the use of bearings (the foldable component). With more than 100,000 opening and fold acts, Foxconn will be stress testing the system.

A November 2020 Chinese supply chain rumour indicated that Apple is planning for a foldable iPhone release date of 2022.
