What's New in macOS Catalina

The newest version of the operating system that is running on the Mac is macOS Catalina, aka macOS 10.15. The name macOS Catalina was inspired by the island of Santa Catalina, commonly known as Catalina and one of the Channel Islands off the Southern California coast.

Apple has removed the iTunes app on macOS Catalina, which has been a staple of the Mac operating system since 2001. Three apps were divided into iTunes: Music, Podcasts, and TV.

The new apps are now close in nature to iTunes, but are separated by features. In Catalina, you can still control your computers, but it's done now through the Finder rather than through an app. Media synchronization can be achieved using Apple TV, podcasts, or applications for music.

There is complete access to the music library in the Music app, just as in iTunes, regardless of whether the songs were bought or ripped from a CD. The Music App contains the iTunes Music Store, and you can also access Apple Music content.

Similar to the Apple TV app on Apple TV and iOS smartphones, the Apple TV app offers access to TV and movie content, as well as content from Apple's streaming TV service, Apple TV+. For the first time, along with Dolby Atmos, the new TV app supports 4K HDR content on 2018 and later Macs.

Users can access their Podcasts library, which was previously housed in iTunes, inside the new Podcasts app. There are search tools, displaying top charts, and managing the archive, plus new categories curated by the editor. Podcasts is a basic app for those who listen to a lot of podcasts, but it is useful.

A new Sidecar feature lets you transform your iPad with the click of a button into a monitor for your Mac. Apple Pencil support works with Sidecar on the iPad, so in applications like Photoshop, you can convert your iPad into a drawing tablet. You can expand or mirror your monitor so that both displays show the same content.

In macOS, macOS Catalina ramps up security, and Gatekeeper, Apple's security protocol, scans for known security problems for all your applications. Apps will need new privacy protection to seek your permission before accessing your records.

There is now an option to approve security prompts by clicking on the side button of the watch for those with an Apple Watch set up to unlock the Mac. For the first time, Activation Lock is enabled by Macs with a T2 chip in them, rendering them worthless to criminals just like it does on the iPhone.

Also available on iPadOS and iOS 13, a new Find My app brings the Find My Mac and Find My Friends technology for the first time to a Mac app, and it has a feature that allows you to monitor your devices even when they are offline. This choice leverages Bluetooth and other people's devices that may be around your missing or stolen device, safely and anonymously relaying its location back to you.

In macOS Catalina, Screen Time has extended to Mac, so you can now monitor your device use through all of your devices, not just your iPhone and iPad, for a clearer image of how you spend your time.

Mac Catalyst helps developers to port their iPad apps to the Mac with only a few XCode clicks and slight modifications, which eventually brings to the Mac App Store a higher number of macOS apps.

There is a new Photos interface that organizes photos by day, month, or year, while still selecting your best photos intelligently (while taking out screenshots, receipts, and other less desirable images) so that all your favourite memories can be relived.

There's a new start page in Safari that uses Siri Recommendations to view frequently visited websites, bookmarks, iCloud tabs, read list collections, and links you've sent to a more customized start page of Safari in Messages.

Mail in macOS Catalina introduces new functionality to block addresses, mutate threads, and unsubscribe from commercial email lists from unique senders. In Notes, there's a new Gallery View, along with new view-only collaboration options and sharing files.

As with iOS, to make it easier to build and organize your reminders, the Reminders app has been overhauled, adding a new user interface, smart lists, attachment support, and integration of messages. Voice Control, an accessibility option, allows users who can't typically use a Mac to operate their computer via Siri using only voice commands. On iOS 13 and iPadOS, this feature still works.

With macOS Catalina, your 32-bit apps no longer function, and when you first install the update, you'll get an alert. Only 64-bit apps are supported by macOS Catalina, which means that some of your older apps that have not been modified for a while will not run at all. The Dashboard feature, which was disabled by default for a long time, was also officially removed from Catalina.

Current Version - macOS 10.15.7

The new version of macOS Catalina is macOS Catalina 10.15.7, released on September 24 to the public. MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 solves a problem where macOS does not connect to WIFI automatically, fixes a bug that could prevent files from syncing through iCloud Drive, and most importantly, fixes a problem that caused a small white flickering line to appear on machines equipped with the Radeon Pro 5700 XT for new iMac owners. Notes to the release are below:

macOS Catalina 10.15.7 provides important security updates and bug fixes for your Mac.

  • Resolves an issue where macOS would not automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks
  • Fixes an issue that could prevent files syncing through iCloud Drive
  • Addresses a graphic issue that may occur on iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) with Radeon Pro 5700 XT
An update to macOS Catalina 10.15.7 that provides many security patches for macOS vulnerabilities has also been released by Apple. Apple suggests that the update be installed by all Catalina users.

No More iTunes

The iTunes app that has been available on the Mac since 2001 has been eliminated by macOS Catalina in favour of a new collection of split-up applications that do much of what iTunes used to do.

In macOS Catalina, there are new songs, podcasts, and TV applications, all of which replace the single iTunes app that used to house music, podcasts, and material related to television. The system management capabilities that were previously housed in iTunes are now accessible via Finder.

In macOS Catalina, Home Sharing has not been removed and remains open. You can access it by going to Device Settings > Sharing -> Media Sharing and clicking the box next to the option for Home Sharing. Catalina Home Sharing doesn't need you to have an open app for it to function.

Apple Music

The former iTunes logo is used for the Music app, with a music note on a white field. It looks similar to the Music feature in iTunes in Mojave, giving you access to music that you bought, imported, or purchased through Apple Music. The Music app has been created for Apple Music, Apple says, but older features remain for non-subscribers as well.

In the Music app, your iTunes Music Library is available, as are all of your playlists and intelligent playlists. All of your music is in one place, sorted into a new menu in the sidebar by artists, albums, songs, playlists, and recent additions.

macos catalina apple music

To browse through Apple Music, Apple Music subscribers will see the "For You," "Browse" and "Up Next" sections.

For music purchases, the iTunes Store is available, so it continues to be an option if you prefer conventional music purchases over streaming services. You can also download music (such as ripping songs from CDs) from third-party sources and there are also conversion tools available.
macoscatalinaapplemusic

In the Music app, there is an enhanced player that provides quick access to lyrics as you listen, along with a spot where you can see what songs are going to be played next.

Apple Podcasts

For macOS Catalina, Apple has created a standalone podcasts app, which replaces the podcasts feature available in iTunes in earlier versions of macOS.

A "Listen Now" feature allows you to continue listening to your favourite episodes of podcasts or see when a new episode is available in a series you like, and it is also the go-to place to discover new suggestions you may like.

podcastsapp

A Browse tab lets you see the most popular trending podcasts available from Apple editors, including podcasts focusing on current affairs, Latest & Noteworthy selections, Curated Collections, Categories, and more, plus Top Charts.

macoscatalinapodcasts

All the podcasts that you subscribe to are grouped into Recently Updated, Shows, Episodes, and Downloads in the Library section of the app, which includes episodes that you have downloaded for offline listening. Apple says that when searching for a subject or individuals, search has been improved with better results, with a new option to find episodes featuring a particular guest or host.

Apple TV

The new Apple TV app features a "Watch Now" feature like iOS and Apple TV, which provides personalized suggestions of items you may want to watch along with keeping track of shows you're already watching via a "Up Next" feature.

macoscatalinatvapp

You can start a show on any of your Apple devices and pick it up on another device now that the TV app is available on the Mac. With the Channels feature, you can subscribe to and watch subscription content right in the Apple TV app, and later this year, the app also houses Apple TV+ content.
macoscatalinatvapp2

There is also a library feature that contains all the TV shows and videos you have bought from iTunes, along with Movies, TV Shows, and Kids tabs for both finding new content and purchasing or renting movies and TV shows.
macoscatalinatvapp3

On Mac models launched in 2018 or later with 4K resolution displays, 4K, 4K HDR, and 4K Dolby Vision content purchased from the Apple TV app can be viewed in 4K. Dolby Atmos can also take advantage of Mac notebooks released in 2018 or later.

Managing Devices

Content from Apple TV, Apple Music, and Apple Podcasts can be synced across all of your devices using iCloud, but that feature is still available from each of the three apps for those who prefer using cables and syncing directly from a Mac.

Via the Finder, you can also back up, uninstall, and restore your iOS devices using your Mac. When you connect an iOS device with a cable to a Mac, it is now located in the sidebar of the Finder, where all of the tools and features previously available through iTunes can be found.

Sidecar

The Sidecar is designed to let you use an iPad with your Mac as a secondary monitor. To get into Sidecar mode with an accessible iPad, you can hold your mouse over the green button on any Mac app window, access it from the System Preferences app, or access it from the AirPlay interface on the Mac.
sidecarairplay

Sidecar allows you to either mirror your display or extend it to your iPad, and in apps like Photoshop, because the Apple Pencil works in Sidecar mode, you can use the Apple Pencil as a mouse or as a drawing app.

mac sidecar 2

Whatever you do on the iPad is actually done on the Mac, such as creating a sketch in Photoshop, so it can turn the iPad into a drawing tablet connected to the Mac. Using the Markup feature on the iPad, you can also do things like writing and sketching on PDFs or marking up documents.

sidecarmacoscatalina

On the sidebar, widely used controls are found, and modifier keys can be used to allow shortcuts in pro apps, as well as to view or cover the menu bar, dock, and keyboard. Touch Bar applications display a virtual touch bar at the bottom of the iPad screen, even for Macs that do not have a touch bar.

Sidecar works with the new multi-touch iPadOS gestures, so you can use touch gestures for cutting, copying, pasting, and undoing all on the on-screen keyboard with the Mac display extended or mirrored.

On compatible computers, Sidecar runs smoothly, but it is restricted to newer Macs. It is understood that the Sidecar is compatible with the following machines:

  • Late 2015 27" iMac or newer

  • 2017 iMac Pro

  • Mid 2016 MacBook Pro or newer

  • Late 2018 Mac mini or newer

  • Late 2018 MacBook Air or newer

  • Early 2016 MacBook or newer

  • 2019 Mac Pro

On the iPad, Sidecar is limited to the Apple Pencil-supported iPad models.

You can use Sidecar wirelessly between your iPad and Mac up to 10 meters apart, or you can use a cable to hold your iPad powered.

Find My

Find My is a new app that combines the previously available Find My Mac feature through iCloud and the apps for Find My Friends from iOS devices into one app that is available on iOS and Mac for the first time.

The Find My app is built to make it easy to find the devices in a single app and your friends who share their place.

Find My works like the previous apps Find My iPhone and Find My Friends, showing locations of devices and friends, but there is a new function that helps you to find a lost Mac even if it does not have a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

findmymacoscatalina

By using crowd-sourced location information supplied by Bluetooth signals, the Find My feature works. Basically, your devices send off a Bluetooth signal that other nearby iPhones, iPads, and Macs will pick up, relaying that signal back to you so that your lost computer can be identified.

To keep your location safe, Find My uses end-to-end encryption, so it takes at least two Apple devices to function, aka your Mac and an iPhone or other device.

The signal your Mac gives off is transmitted as a public key, which is encrypted and sent back to you with the location of your computer when picked up by other people's devices. Only one of your other devices can decode the encrypted signal with information from the missing computer, keeping the location of your device protected throughout all times.

If you have Family Sharing allowed, in the Find My app, you can see the devices of your family under your own devices, just as with the previous Find My iPhone/Mac tools.

New App Features

Photos

Apple has updated the Photos app in macOS Catalina and iOS 13, adding a new Photos tab that is designed to put your best photos front and Centre so that you can relive your memories at a glance.

The app allows you to access all of your photos as before, but it also has new options grouped by day, month, and year for viewing pictures. These viewing modes filter out clutter such as screenshots, duplicate pictures, and receipt photos so that without the cruft, you can see your most important moments.

macoscatalinaphotos

Live images and videos are muted in the new Photos tab as you click, which has the effect of bringing your photo collection to life. The best of your pictures, followed by smaller shots, are also seen larger, making your photo library more complex.

macoscatalinaphotosdays
The view of Days shows the images you took that day while the view of Months displays your photos grouped into events so that you can see at a glance the best of the month. The Years view surfaces of photographs taken in past years around the present date.

macoscatalinaphotosmonths

Apple highlights titles such as spot, concert artist, holiday, and more, and you can zoom in or zoom out under the "All" view to see more or less of your entire photo collection at once.

The Photos app will identify who is in your photos and what's happening to highlight moments such as birthdays, anniversaries, and trips using the machine learning capabilities of your Mac.

Safari

In Safari, there is a new start page that includes preferences, regularly visited pages, and recommended content from Siri, such as websites in your browsing history, recently visited sites, bookmarks, reading list content, iCloud Tabs, and links that you receive in the Messages app.

safarifavorites

When you sign up for a new account and use a weak, easy to guess password, Safari now offers weak password alerts. It's a weak password and provides a better alternative password, Safari tells you.

There is also a new option to allow the Picture in Picture function from the audio tab button, and Apple is now enabling the authentication of iCloud logins to Safari with Touch ID on macOS Catalina.

Notes

With a new gallery view, macOS Catalina features an improved Notes app designed to let you see all your files and Notes thumbnails at a glance. New tools let you manage files and subfolders, and options to share an entire folder are available.

In the Notes app, Search is more efficient and can identify what's inside your notes in the photos to help you locate relevant text such as receipts or bills.

macoscatalinanotes

With options to reorder checklist items, indents (added with a swipe), and a feature that allows you to reuse a checklist with a click to uncheck all the items, checklists have been enhanced.

Mail

A new Block Sender feature in Mail lets you block email from a particular person, routing all of the messages from that person into the garbage.

Noisy email threads can be silenced with a new mute option that silences all messages across all of your Apple devices.

Apple is now providing an unsubscribe link above the email header for email messages from commercial lists, and clicking it will delete your email address from the mailing list.

Reminders

In iOS 13 and macOS Catalina, the Reminders app was entirely reconstructed to make it much more usable and to duplicate features found in more stable third-party applications.

An improved template divided into four parts is featured in the latest Reminders app Today, Planned, Everything and Flagged.
macosremindersapp

Reminders are arranged, with customizable colours and icons, into various lists. You can construct additional nesting reminders under each reminder entry, and several lists can be grouped together.

There are options for attaching attachments, images, papers, scans, and web links relevant to a reminder when making a new reminder, and you can even include times, dates, places, flags, and more all at once.

Apple claims that it automatically understands and provides you with appropriate suggestions when you type longer, more informative sentences in the Reminders app. When you make a schedule in messages, Siri intelligence may also send up suggestions to create a reminder.

QuickTime Player

QuickTime Player has an image-in-picture feature that allows you to play a video that is not interrupted by other windows in a resizable window, so you can display it when working on other stuff.

An enhanced Movie Inspector pane also provides you with more comprehensive technical details on the open media file, such as video colour space, HDR format, bit depth, size, and aspect ratio.

Other new features include timecode support, transparent video support, and the ability to create a movie file encoded with H.264, HEVC, or ProRes by navigating to a sequentially numbered image folder and selecting the resolution, frame rate, and quality of the encoding.

Home

Inside HomeKit Scenes and Automations, AirPlay 2 speakers can be used in iOS 13 and macOS Catalina, enabling your AirPlay 2 devices such as HomePod to be programmed to do things like play music when you get home, or to turn off when you leave.

When a HomeKit sensor senses something like motion, or at a certain time of day, you can also have music coming on.

HomeKit Secure Video

Safe Video is a new HomeKit API that analyses video recorded by your smart home cameras right at home using the iPad, Apple TV, or HomePod (Home Hub devices). Video feeds are end-to-end encrypted and posted to iCloud, which ensures that you see the video footage alone without the possibility of accessing it through hackers.

As with current home surveillance cameras, if activity is detected, HomeKit Secure Video offers alerts so that you can check the recordings.

For video content that doesn't count against the iCloud data plan cap, Apple provides 10 days of free iCloud storage, but there's a bit of a catch - you need to have a 200GB iCloud data plan ($2.99/month) for a single camera or a 2TB iCloud data plan ($9.99/month) for up to five home security cameras.

In the near future, Netatmo, Logitech, and Eufy intend to help HomeKit Secure Footage.

Other New Features

Apple Arcade

There is a new "Apple Arcade" tab in the Mac App Store which provides access to the Apple Arcade gaming service that Apple debuted in the fall of 2019. Apple Arcade offers unrestricted access for subscribers to hundreds of games that operate on Mac, Apple TV, iPhone and iPad.

Apple Arcade costs $4.99 a month and allows games to be played for that monthly fee by up to six members of the same family. With all gameplay included in the subscription fee, Apple Arcade games have no in-app purchases and no advertising.

Revamped Apple ID Profile

The Device Preferences app also shows your front and centre Apple ID and profile, offering access to settings for your Apple Account and Family Sharing.

There are some new ways to press on your Apple Account, including an Overview mode, where you can ensure that your account is signed in and that features are working.

macoscatalinaappleidprofile

Basic account and security details, such as name, phone number, email address, password, payment information, shipping information, and email preferences, are available, and there is also a place where you can access current subscriptions, past transactions, and App Store, Apple Music, Apple Books, and more settings

The Family Sharing section allows you to see which subscriptions you share and which services are switched on while the sidebar includes a list of all your devices.

Screen Time

The iPhone and iPad feature introduced in iOS 12, Screen Time, has been extended to the Mac with macOS Catalina. In all platforms, Screen Time helps you to get a good picture of how much you use your Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Screen Time syncs all the devices with Downtime and App Limits, and parental controls are also available for parents on all devices.
macoscatalinascreentime

A combined limit feature, designed to allow you to build limits with combinations of app categories, individual applications, or websites, is new to Catalina and iOS 13. There's also a new "One More Minute" feature, which offers time to end a game, save your job, or end a conversation when a time limit is up.

In an update coming this spring, Apple will add Communication Limits, letting parents control who children can communicate with icaand who can communicate with them throughout the day and during downtime.

Mac Catalyst

Mac Catalyst (formerly known as Project Catalyst), which began with iOS 12, is designed to allow iOS developers with a limited amount of work to port their iOS apps to the Mac.

project catalyst

In macOS Catalina, developers can port their iPad apps to the Mac, and the feature extends to the iPhone in later updates. The ability to port iOS software to the Mac has added more apps to the Mac App Store optimized for the Mac.

Voice Control

Voice Control is a new usability function that allows you to use Siri voice commands to completely control your Mac with your voice. It's also available on iOS computers, and for those who can not use conventional input methods, it is a useful control tool.

For dictation purposes, Voice Control uses Siri for audio-to-text transcription, and there is support for custom phrases. All voice control processing is on the computer, ensuring the data stays private.

To get word and emoji feedback, you can use Voice Control, and full rich text editing tools are available. For dictation and system orders, Voice Control functions and can manage the entire operating system.

iCloud Drive

It is possible to share private links to iCloud Drive directories, allowing anyone with access to the connection to view the iCloud drive folder and add/edit files. Apple says folder sharing is scheduled to roll out next spring for iCloud Drive, so there's a bit of a wait until it's available.

Apple Watch Unlocking

The Apple Watch can be used for authentication anywhere you need to enter your Mac password, such as displaying passwords in Safari preferences, unlocking a note, or authorising software instals, with an Apple Watch connected to a Mac running macOS Catalina.

applewatchmacunlock

To authenticate, when a password is prompted, you can double-click the side button on your Apple Watch. In the Security and Privacy section of Device Preferences, Apple Watch authentication must be allowed.

When you log into your Apple ID on a new Mac, iPad, or iPhone, you can now also obtain authentication codes from your Apple Watch.

Privacy and Security

Dedicated System Volume

MacOS Catalina, according to Apple, is intended to run in a dedicated read-only device volume, separating it from all other data and ensuring that important operating system files can not be overwritten by anything.

Driver Kit

With Driver Kit and extensions to the user space framework, hardware peripherals no longer need to run their code using kernel extensions directly within macOS. These programme now run like every other app independently from the operating system and do not impact macOS if anything goes wrong.

Gatekeeper Improvements

Gatekeeper is designed to ensure that Apple has tested all new apps for known security vulnerabilities before they run for the first time on your device. In Catalina, the security of Gatekeeper ranges from checking the source of the app to checking what's actually in the app.

Data Protections

Before apps can access data in the Documents, Screen, and Downloads directories, macOS Catalina requires express user authorization.
macoscatalinadocumentprotection

Apps must also receive permission to access iCloud Drive, iCloud storage provider folders from third parties, removable media, and external volumes. Until an app can perform key logging, capture a screenshot, or capture a video recording of your device, permission is also required.

Activation Lock

Activation Lock is now supported on Mac models with an Apple T2 Security Chip. That ensures that your Mac can only be deleted and reactivated with your Apple ID credentials if it is misplaced or lost, rendering it inaccessible to criminals.

Restore From Snapshot

If a new update is incompatible with third-party applications, macOS Recovery can be used to restore your computer from a snapshot right before installation. MacOS and applications run as they did before the update.

File Provider API

A new File Provider API for cloud storage providers allows cloud services to seamlessly integrate without a kernel extension into the Finder app, which protects your Mac's protection. In the Mac App Store, cloud storage services including Dropbox are now now able to sell games.

No More 32-Bit Apps

32-bit apps will no longer run on macOS Catalina since macOS Mojave was the last update of iOS to support older 32-bit apps. For the last 10 years, Apple has been phasing out 32-bit applications, but many consumers will be shocked to find that when upgrading to Catalina, their old apps no longer function.

When you instal it, macOS Catalina warns that certain applications are not going to work, letting you know which apps need to be replaced.
32bitappssupport

As 64-bit apps can take advantage of more memory and deliver faster device performance, Apple is ending support for 32-bit apps. Apple innovations such as Metal only work for 64-bit apps, and 32-bit support needs to end for Apple to ensure that Mac apps have all of the new developments and optimizations. 32-bit apps are in the simplest words, unreliable.

No More Dashboard

The Dashboard, a longstanding Mac feature that the company has been phasing out for the last few years, has also been withdrawn by Apple.

A popular Mac feature, housing sticky notes, a weather interface, a clock, a calculator, and other customizable widgets used to be the Dashboard option, first implemented in OS X 10.4 Tiger.

Dashboard is disabled by default beginning with macOS 10.10 Yosemite, and there is no more Dashboard app in Catalina at all.

Compatibility

MacOS Catalina is compatible, though there are some variations, with several machines from 2012 and later. With the exception of the mid-2010 and mid-2012 Mac Pro versions, which are not getting the update, Catalina runs on all the same Macs that were able to run macOS Mojave.
  • 2015 MacBook and later

  • 2012 iMac and later

  • 2012 MacBook Air and later

  • 2017 iMac Pro and later

  • 2012 MacBook Pro and later

  • 2013 Mac Pro and later

  • 2012 Mac mini and later
