New 8-Core, 16-Thread AMD Ryzen 3780U Microsoft Surface Laptop Spotted in Fresh Benchmark; New Inbound Versions
When it was unveiled, the Surface Laptop 3 wasn't the most powerful computer in its class because it was held back due to a 4-core, 8-thread AMD Ryzen 7 3780U Processor, and that was only if you went up the specifications chart for an extra fee to bump up the hardware. Fortunately, it looks like your prayers have been answered, at least according to the latest benchmark leak, for those who wanted a premium Microsoft Surface Laptop that also didn't compromise on efficiency.
Microsoft May Be Sticking to the Same Ryzen 7 3780U Name for an Improved Ryzen 4000 Series CPU, or Newer
The unnamed Surface Laptop, which we might as well call the Surface Laptop 4 at this stage, was spotted with an 8-core, 16-thread AMD CPU running at a base clock speed of 2.00GHz, according to the Geekbench 5 score. There is currently no Ryzen 4000 series that runs at the aforementioned clock speed on AMD's website. The Ryzen 9 4800U, featuring 8 cores, 16 threads but running at a base frequency of 1.80GHz, is the only component that comes near.
This may mean that Microsoft and AMD probably worked together on this 'custom' Ryzen 7 3780U processor to provide a minor performance boost, all while sticking to the same name. This can confuse buyers, believing that both the Surface Laptop 3 and the Surface Laptop 4 are sold by Microsoft.

The Geekbench 5 leak is interesting; you'll find DDR4 RAM listed instead of LPDDR4X when you scroll below. This could mean that instead of soldering it, Microsoft will stick to upgradable memory sticks on the upcoming Surface Laptop 4, enabling users to update their RAM in the future.
Unfortunately, the teardown process on Surface Laptop 3 was not the easiest, so hopefully, Microsoft is expected to implement some modifications on Surface Laptop 4 that give users easy access to the innards. When the latest model is expected to launch or whether Microsoft is waiting to enter the market for newer Ryzen mobile processors, there's no telling. We'll keep you in the loop when they do.
