Upcoming phones: The future smartphones of 2021

The Xbox One X potentially makes an even better argument for itself on the other side of the aisle, as with the PS4 Pro, Microsoft seems likely to continue supplying it with games for longer than Sony.

Again, for an Xbox Series S or X, we still think you'd be better off plumping up, but if you see a knock-down price for the Xbox One X, you may still have a nice time playing older games on it, and even some newer updates.

As with the handsets already launched, we have rounded up the best smartphones elsewhere for 2020 - those we consider to be the best across all platforms. If your budget is a little smaller, our budget smartphones are also available for less than £ 200 - and there is also a mid-range roundup of up to £ 400.

The upcoming generation of phones

Here are some of the anticipated handsets for 2020 and 2021, before we dive into the details:

  • Xiaomi Mi 11
  • Nokia 7.3 5G
  • Nokia 9.3 PureView - or Nokia 10?
  • Huawei Mate X2
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
  • OnePlus 9, 9 Pro and 9E
  • Samsung Galaxy Fold E
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2/3
  • Apple iPhone SE 2 Plus
  • Apple iPhone 13
  • Xiaomi flip phonePOCKET-LINT

Xiomi M1  11

Xiaomi is likely to be first out of the door to confirm that it will use the new Qualcomm hardware - so we anticipate an announcement during the December 2020 Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit. No other specifics have emerged, but soon enough, we will know more.

Huawei Mate X2

The next-gen folding phone from Huawei officially has the codename Teton and will move from the design of the original Mate X with the exterior display to one with the interior display. Not much else has been said about this handset, but in October 2020 we might see it displayed.

Nokia 7.3 5G

Nokia is looking to add another affordable 5G phone to its list, and it is rumoured that this phone will be used with the new MediaTek Dimensity or Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G hardware. Nokia has announced that it is working on a more affordable 5G system, and that this latest Qualcomm hardware will be fitted in the future.

Nokia 9.3 PureView

For well over a year, rumours of a new smartphone have been circulating, with no sign of the mysterious phone. However, there was a report that Nokia might hold an event to launch new devices in November, and the Nokia 9.3 PureView could be on the list, but it's been some time since we've seen any leaks - and more recently, a leaked doc has indicated a Nokia 10. We now expect that a February update will be available.

Samsung Galaxy S21

With an interesting in-integrated camera housing in the top corner of the rear, the Samsung Galaxy S21 could take Samsung in a slightly cheaper direction. The S21 will be adorned with a 6.2-inch flat display and we believe there will be a larger S21+ introduced next to it. Rumours suggest a February 2021 launch in January.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Next-gen smartphones from Samsung are already seeing multiple leaks. We expect a launch in February 2021, we expect the Ultra to retain the big battery and big megapixel cameras, and we expect Exynos' next-gen 5nm processors. As recently leaked, a design with a massive rear camera housing, showing off a fresh new design.

LG future flagship

A potential flagship phone launch, which is anticipated in Q1 2021, is said to be scheduled by LG. Nothing has been said on what to expect, but the general sense is that it's going to be based on the V series of devices.

OnePlus 9, 9 Pro and 9E

In releasing its smartphones, OnePlus has been fairly routine and spring 2021 will be when we'd expect the OnePlus 9 to be seen. The OnePlus 9, 9 Pro and even a more affordable variant called the OnePlus 9E were suggested by reports. Renders have surfaced, making the OnePlus 9 Pro look a lot like the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE.

LG Velvet 2

It is thought that LG is going to launch the Velvet 2 update. It is scheduled to be revealed at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit around March 2021 on the modified Snapdragon 700 series hardware. Nothing else about the phone is known, but we expect it to be a gradual update.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2/3

Samsung is concentrating its efforts on foldable phones and we expect a new Flip to be launched in 2021. The only detail we've received so far is that the Galaxy S update is supposed to be published separately, so we guess it'll appear in June 2021. It is said that the monitor will get an upgrade for smoother scrolling to 120Hz.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold E

There have been some rumour threads that say that Samsung is looking at more affordable folding phones - and what we might get is the Galaxy Z Fold E. A Fold model with a smaller external monitor such as the Z Flip is spoken about, intended to sell much cheaper - with $1100 suggested. Will the 2021 Fold model be a cheaper one?

Apple iPhone SE Plus

Rumours began talking about a larger model as soon as the 2020 iPhone SE was released. There are those wondering if a Plus model would be introduced to slot into the iPhone 8 Plus vacuum, with the iPhone SE basically taking the iPhone 8 body. Can Apple fill this cheap-but-big void, with the new iPhone 12 mini costing much more than the SE?

Apple iPhone 13

The iPhone 12 has just been announced, but we're already hearing that Apple may be looking at a Touch ID under-display device. Knowing Apple, it will take the same design as the 12 to design the new iPhone, but would it decrease the notch on that display?

Xiaomi flip phone

In the past, Xiaomi has shown off a range of folding prototypes, but now there's talk that the company is looking to source Samsung Display components. Xiaomi is thought to be involved in developing a folding phone that is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Some code in MIUI hinting at a potential folding phone was also discovered.
