 (Pocket-lint) - Without having to load your luggage down with stacks of books, there's nothing like going off on a vacation. Today, however, there is still something to be said for being able to access almost infinite quantities of books without having to go to a store to purchase more.

One of the most common options for ebook reading is the Kindle reader, which allows you to read your favourite books on a digital screen, without the limitations of using a tablet or smartphone.

Not only is the power of the Kindle powerful, it is also well-connected, so you can easily download new books. With smooth integration with your Amazon account, it's also extremely simple to use.

Which model you should purchase is the real decision. At present, Amazon sells four Kindle models: Kindle with front light, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Kids Edition and Kindle Oasis. Here's how they disintegrate.

Also, the Amazon Kindle doesn't offer waterproofing, but you get a lot of ereaders for your money at this price. This doesn't reach as far as the Paperwhite below, but it has a lot to say.

Amazon Kindle Kids Edition

Of course, the Kindle Kids Version is targeted at kids and has certain programmes that the other Kindles don't. However, it's the same under the surface as the regular Kindle above. The extra bits that incur a little extra cost are a standard case (available in blue and pink plus some other colours in the US) and a worry-free guarantee that the Kindle will be replaced even if it is accidentally damaged. It also comes with free children's content for a year - Audible audio books and Kindle books.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

When the Paperwhite was introduced, the illumination was its special feature, meaning that without the lights on, you could read it. It's no longer exclusive with the entry level Kindle providing illumination, with the Paperwhite taking a mid-range role in the Kindle line-up instead.

The 6-inch E-Ink monitor has 300 dpi and contrasts better than the normal Kindle, meaning that whites are lighter and blacks are darker. Again, this is a computer with a battery that lasts for weeks on the touchscreen. It is thinner and lighter than before in this design (last updated in 2018), as well as now offering IPX8 waterproofing, with a flat front - so no more ridge on that bezel like the old version.

The Paperwhite comes with options for Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G. The latter has the benefit that you're still linked, which means that you can browse and buy the next bestseller and get read if you finish your book lying on the beach in Spain. Initially, the 3G option costs a little more to buy, but there are no continuing costs, it's a free link afterwards. Again, versions with and without "special offers" (advertising) are options.

The value of lighting for most individuals would make this the Kindle of choice, saving cash over the Oasis, but enhancing the simple Kindle.

Amazon Kindle Oasis

Bigger, better and now cheaper, the Kindle Oasis is designed to be the ultimate reading device. This model has a 7-inch display so slightly larger than all the other devices, but also incorporating the features. It offers illumination but with more LEDs so things are more evenly distributed. It also boasts the auto-brightness of the (now retired) Kindle Voyage.

The Kindle Oasis is also waterproof, meaning that while retaining a thin and light design, it is safe in the bath or at the beach, so it is easy to slip into any pocket. It's a premium reader and top of the Kindle family with 6 weeks of battery life, and it also offers Bluetooth so you can listen to Audible books from your Oasis.

Again, with the 8 GB Wi-Fi model being the most affordable of the range and the 32 GB 3 G variant seeing the price soaring, there is the option of Wi-Fi or 3 G versions. The Oasis is easily the most experienced Kindle - you can enjoy the extra abilities it provides if you read every day.
