Best 2021 Xbox controllers: Get the advantage of these third-party and official pads with these

(Pocket-lint) - The Xbox controller has a pretty remarkable lineage already - following the very unusual design embraced by the original console's chunky gamepad, the Xbox 360 introduced a new type that's stood the test of time.

It has been updated only marginally over the Xbox One years, and for the Xbox Series X and S as well, it has remained very similar. That's a testament to a great deal of architecture, but it also has some limitations. Picking up a new controller might be a game-changer, because it's not quite the right shape for you, or whether you want some extra buttons and features.

The best Xbox controllers for all uses

Microsoft Xbox Elite Series 2

A few years back, Microsoft spied on individuals getting into custom controllers and wanted to take over the market itself, and the second iteration of its controller is formidable.

This thing is expensive, like many pro controllers, but it's got the official status bonus, and a wide range of customization options to let you tune it perfectly. Whether it's rear paddles in whatever arrangement you want or thumbsticks resisting the right number, for most people right now, this is the best controller - if they're willing to pay!

Xbox Wireless Controller

A new controller has been introduced to the next generation of Xbox consoles, the Xbox Series X and Series S. The official controller is the best bet for you if you don't want all the fancy personalization, and are just looking for quick wireless games.

It has some nice improvements over the Xbox One version, including a dedicated screenshot and video clip capture button, with grip and texture enhancements, too.

Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition

Razer makes a whole range of peripherals that are great for Xbox gamers, including some excellent headsets, and its Wolverine Tournament Edition is a similarly impressive controller.

This is very much based on the official size and shape, but adds to the Xbox Elite controller a similar bevvy of choices. These include trigger stops (hugely helpful in shooters) and programmable buttons to quickly set up your own shortcuts - you can also trigger higher or lower stick sensitivity, a real boon on the fly.

It's a fantastic pad that even undercuts the price of Microsoft's own pro controller impressively, while it is wired (which most serious gamers will tell you is better for latency anyway).

Xbox One Wireless Controller

Although it may no longer be the newest official controller, the older Xbox One pad is still a great purchase and may also fall down with time in price, becoming a great bargain that will still fit with the newer consoles.

In terms of comfort and reliability, it may just be the greatest ever first-party console controller, and with Bluetooth on board the later models, and the inclusion of a headphone jack, for most people, it's quite a perfect option.

Thrustmaster eSwapX Pro Controller

This controller is a good upgrade to the eSwap Pro that has been available for a few years on the PC and PlayStation. First of all, it's a convenient wired controller with very nice clicker buttons on the back of the pad and some welcome additional buttons.

The simplicity with which you can switch around the three control units - two joysticks and a D-Pad that can be arranged in any system you want - is where things get distinctive. You just take them out and exchange them, and it's as plain as that. This could be the one for you if you want absolute control over the layout of your pad.

SCUF Prestige

Look no further than a SCUF controller if true customization is your priority. These modded versions of Xbox official pads provide an almost boggling variety of choices.

For almost every bit of the controller, you can select colours and finishes, as well as features such as extra buttons and paddles, assorted grips and thumbsticks and much more. The more you add, the more the price adds up, but we might well go for a completely kitted out SCUF controller if we had an unlimited budget.

Xbox Adaptive Controller

Obviously, our final selection is a little different from the other controllers on this list, but in our opinion, it is also the most significant of all of them.

In recent years, Microsoft has done excellent work in the field of usability, and the jewel in that crown is the Adaptive Controller, a device that enables individuals to build fully customized and special controller arrangements that accommodate gamers who may not be able to use conventional pads. It's also affordable for what it does, and opens up a whole world of play for those who may not always been able to enjoy it.
